For reasons unknown the excellent weathering site, Modeltrainsweathered.com has closed down. Unfortunately all the great information, weathering tips and photos that were on the site are now almost impossible to access. This is a great loss to the model rr community.

Interesting...I didn't know this. Too bad...there was sure some really gifted folks who posted some great work there.

For me it says "This website is temporarily unavailable", it also says that the owner should contact tech support, Hopefully this means that the website should be back on within a few days.

A quick google for modeltrainsweathered and closes shows that you have posted your claim that they have closed down permanently in at least two different model railroading forums, but I do not see any any actual announcements that they have closed down permanently, or that they were planning to close down permanently?
Hopefully just a temporary glitch - someone forgot to inform the service provider running the web site that the owner of the modeltrainsweathered.com forum had a new credit card to be billed, or someone dropped the ball on time-to-live for DNS entries in the connection with switching service providers, or a server crash at their service provider, or something like that. If so, it ought to be sorted out in a couple of days.
Time will tell.

Stein...the site has been down for over 2 weeks and now I heard from the site-owner ...he said the site will not be re-opening as he cannot afford to keep it going.

Ah, guess that's it, then.
Didn't they use to have some kind of fee to join - like $20 a year? Guess there wasn't enough of a demand for the forum.
Sad for those who contributed to the forum.
Reminds me - how is this forum doing for operating expenses?

We're doing just fine for now thank you.
We are on course for our long-term goals. An occasional donation (big button at bottom of page)
or the sale of something in our store
(
http://www.the-gauge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=775 ) helps. We ask for, and accept donations from those that can give. That helps us to remain on course, but it's never a requirement in order to be here.

Stein...it was originally a free forum then the owner decided to make it fee based...that didn't last long because people started leaving so he then made it a free forum again...it was free for the last year or so.

What a bummer! So much talent on that site! I was hoping that I just had the URL wrong and that it hadn't gone away. So many tips and photos on there.

I tried to register and was denied because my mail address (same as used with big blue) is "spam". An email to the admin (as posted on the welcome page) returned with permanent error....

faraway....Try it without the smf attached at the end...and maybe try using a hotmail address until you can sort out the problem with one of the admins.
