Very interesting Gus. Is it a kit? Sorry if I missed your reply, it seems an unusual medium for a kit but obviously has great potential. Thumbsup

Great to see you using some initiative and claiming another bit of bench space as the need arises, and not stifling your creative skills by working in a cramped environment. Cheers

This is an interesting build!

You see metal used for loco & rolling stock construction, nut it's pretty rare to see a real metal building! 8-)

Is it a kit, or dd you fabricate that yourself?

Re: NEW FOUNDRY BUILD - Steamtrains - 01-13-2010

Thanks for the comments, guys....Yes, it's a kit by Suydam. It's the first metal kit I've built, and it's coming along nicely (if I do say so myself.... Goldth ). Pics are coming sooner rather than later.......... 357

Re: NEW FOUNDRY BUILD - Steamtrains - 01-16-2010

OK...Here's the latest progress report the crowd has been clamoring for.....It's been painted, weathered, electrified, and ready for putting the roofs put in place. I couldn't do this 'till the wiring was in, since once roofed, it would have been impossible to do. I ended up making the lamp shades which I hadn't thought of doing before....

Here goes .....

Since the building is wide open, I'm going to have to fashion an interior. I'm thinking a couple of furnaces, cleaning area, and possibly a heat treatment oven...

D-d-d-a-a-a-t-t-s-s-s all folks.....Next installment will be of the finished building (sans interiors..)..... 2285_

P.D. I'm also gonna have to put up a sign with the foundry name. Any ideas for a name..??

Re: NEW FOUNDRY BUILD - nachoman - 01-16-2010

That looks great! What parts came with the kit, and what parts did you add? I recall running across some built suydam models at a swap meet, and I don't recall them having windows - just openings.

Northwestern forge or a humours name like B.D. Castings .
jim

ps nice lamp shades .

Re: NEW FOUNDRY BUILD - Steamtrains - 01-17-2010

Kevin..Everything is stock, with the exception of the beam and lamps. The kit has material for framing the windows, but they were litlle metal strips 1/8" wide, and curled like propellers. No way was I going to put those on..!! Nope

Jim...I'm kind'a leaning towards a "humorous" name, so I'll put your suggestions in the hat....

Keep those cards an letters comin'.... Goldth

Re: NEW FOUNDRY BUILD - Steve - 01-17-2010

Now that's what I'm talking about!!!

Excellent job on the weathering Gus! Thumbsup Thumbsup Thumbsup
It is going to be a really sweet structure when all is said and done.

Great job buddy!

Name
Lostand Foundry

Re: NEW FOUNDRY BUILD - Herc Driver - 01-18-2010

That is a really neat looking building! Great job! Thumbsup

(Just an idea...You could even dent up a wall or two and it would be a real dent into real metal.) Are there any scrap pieces you could make some internal components with...or maybe an attached shed or awnings or rain blocks? I've never seen a metal kit like that...it sure opens up a lot of possibilities.

Re: NEW FOUNDRY BUILD - cnw1961 - 01-18-2010

I love those smoke staks! Very nice structure, Gus, and you did a great job on painting and weathering it. Just curious, what did you use for your lamp shades?

Re: NEW FOUNDRY BUILD - LiveSteamer - 01-18-2010

Looking real good. Cheers

Re: NEW FOUNDRY BUILD - Steamtrains - 01-18-2010

OK....She's finished..!!! 2285_ 2285_
At least for the time being...The interiors will come along later, as will "auxiliary" structures and "ambience"...
This is it..!!

T'was a "pain" to build...but worth it... Thumbsup

Kurt...The shades were made from the caps of some eye-wash bottles I use for cleaning contact lenses.... Goldth

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions...(Still need more names..).

Re: NEW FOUNDRY BUILD - Gary S - 01-18-2010

Fantastic. I've never seen a metal kit like that, thanks for sharing the build with us. And I agree, the weathering and finish look great.

Re: NEW FOUNDRY BUILD - Green_Elite_Cab - 01-18-2010
