Re: what is the most popular type of locomotive on your layout - doctorwayne - 01-16-2009 Josh and Tom, thank you both for the very kind words. Tom, you're correct: the weights were cast to suit. Actually, I thought that my locos might be difficult to sell, as I take out anything, including lights, that doesn't contribute to their operation and pulling power. That home-made plug set-up, to facilitate truck change-out, might be suitable for a DCC hook-up, although I'm not sure that the motor is totally isolated from the frame. And, to get this thread back on topic, the most-used locos on my layout are, like Steve's, eight-coupled steam. These include four Grand Valley Consolidations (modified Bachmanns): [album]466[/album] Four Erie Northshore Mikados (modified Athearns): [album]462[/album] An Elora Gorge & Eastern Mohawk (modified Bachmann): [album]463[/album] And a CNR 0-8-0 (modified Proto2000): [album]467[/album] Still to come, two CNR Consolidations, one DW&P Consolidation, a TH&B Consolidation, and an EG&E heavy Mike. Wayne Re: what is the most popular type of locomotive on your layout - Sumpter250 - 01-16-2009 Easy enough question to answer....articulated steam! 2-4-4-2, 2-6-6-2, 2-8-8-2, 2-8-8-0, 4-6-6-4, 2-6-6-6, 2-6-6-2T. After that, 2-8-4, 2-8-2, 2-8-0, 0-4-0, then shay, and climax, and heistler. Re: what is the most popular type of locomotive on your layout - tetters - 01-16-2009 Still relatively new to the hobby, I only have five locos. All diesels; one Gp 7, three Gp 9's (two of which are back in storage) and lastly my SW900/1200. I really like the switcher unit. It is kind of like the underdog on my layout and as such since I usually root for the little guy, its become my new favorite. Re: what is the most popular type of locomotive on your layout - jbaakko - 01-17-2009 Hummm, this is a loaded question. GE wise: BNSF: 30+ GE Dash 9's (yes, that's the honest truth). UP: ~10 AC4400's. EMD wise? SD40-2's, about 15 of them. Least populous includes one SD50F, one SW1000, one SW1500, one GP7u, on GP9u, one GP15-1, one GP9b, and one GP60M. Re: what is the most popular type of locomotive on your layout - Puddlejumper - 01-17-2009 No layout as of yet but I do have 3 RS11s and 3 GP7s tied for most popular. If you count other similar locos the Geeps win, as I have 3 GP7s, a GP18, and a GP20 that are all high hood and as far as the B&P Road Forman of Engines is concerned, all interchangeable. **EDIT** Upon recounting GP7s win, I have 4 of them. Dave Re: what is the most popular type of locomotive on your layout - LynnB - 01-18-2009 Steam rules on my layout. Re: what is the most popular type of locomotive on your layout - deckroid - 01-18-2009 I guess it depends on my mood at the time. Some of the time, I run my Mainstreet of the Northwest passenger line with F9s. Then other times, I give way to my F7s running freight. But now that I have received my 2-6-6-2, I am going back 25 - 30 years and running steam. I guess I am just too dang wishy washy and continue going back and forth in time. George Re: what is the most popular type of locomotive on your layout - doctorwayne - 01-18-2009 Hi George, and . Glad to see that you made it. Wayne Re: what is the most popular type of locomotive on your layout - Lester Perry - 01-19-2009 STEAM STEAM and more steam.
