Doh! 35

you're right. There will be some highway bridges over some of the bayous too... hadn't even thought of them lately. But yes, at least two highway bridges...

Re: WOOHOO! Good weather = time to build - Charlie B - 11-12-2010

Is the light rail line going to share the highway bridges? Goldth

No light rail on this layout, Charlie. Nitty gritty industrial only!

Got the bridge permanently attached and filled in the gaps between the piers and the concrete slopes with thin plaster. Then got the track down, wired, and ballasted. The glue on the ballast is still wet in the photo.

Gary It looks great. I did a little ballasting myself tonight, about 15 feet of double track. I think ballasting is the one thing that you get the most bang for your work. It takes a little effort, but makes a big improvement.
That bridge is a very worthwhile project. The scene conveys just exactly what you want us to see. Once again, a very nice addition to a great design.

I agree Charlie. I've gotten to where I like doing the ballast too. Good to hear you're making progress on your layout.

Ummm, Gary, Just one question if I may....Do you ever sleep, eat, work etc. The speed at which you are moving on all fronts suggests to me you must do this stuff in your sleep, it was not long ago there was a muddy back yard with nothing in it, and Now...
Congrats, a great read and informative as always.

Gary told us he did fix the roof of the other building yesterday. Might be the nice lady and here kids living in that house have been scared wondering what the stranger is doing on their roof. I hope Gary had a photo ID with him to convince the called police officer Wink I am sure it had a happy end and she remembered who that man is she did not see since weeks/month...

Re: WOOHOO! Good weather = time to build - Gary S - 11-14-2010

OBJack, thanks for the reminder, yesterday was the one year anniversary of the train building. November 13th was the day the foundation crew got started, and the day this very thread began. I suppose it could be said that good progress has been made. I do admit that much of my liesure time is spent enjoying the hobby!

Reinhard, I do make about 100 trips a day between the train building and my workroom in the house. So my wife and daughter do see me quite regularly!

I did not see it on any pictures but I assumed you would have a workplace with the layout. Maybe doing very dirty things like bench work outside but not all the small things like the bridges. Is there a technical reason not to have a work place under/in front of the layout?

Re: WOOHOO! Good weather = time to build - Gary S - 11-14-2010

There isn't any technical reason not to have a workbench out there. When we had the house built a dozen years ago, I changed the plans a bit, adding an approximately 7 foot by 11 foot room that was going to be my library. It is currently being used as my library, but it also morphed into my modeling room. As you can see in the photo, all my modeling supplies are in here, plus I have TV and internet. The room is very comfortable and when doing any model work, I just prefer to be in here.

All you need is a fridge...and you would never have to leave!!!

I told my wife I was thinking of putting a monitor/tv in my room and I got "the look" so I decided against it. I do have a laptop that I carry around the house and it often spends time with me in the "Train Room." I still need to setup a work station and computer somewhere for my Alps printer...but that is a whole different project.

Greg, you haven't learned to just ignore "the look"?

I ignore the "look" with aplomb! When I get the look I just blankly stare back and say, "What?" Misngth Misngth Misngth

If you work at it long enough, you'll be able to anticipate "the look" well in advance of receiving it. In fact, you will know that it's coming the moment which you form the mere thought to, at some point in the near or distant future, do or say that which garners "the look". However, preventative development beyond that seems to be impossible and you will be doomed to experience "the look" "for so long as ye both shall live". Icon_lol Icon_lol

I've been at this so long, I get "the look" from women I don't even know - I'm never homesick. Misngth Misngth
