Great progress Gary!

Looking forward to how this will fit into the layout scenery (and in front of the great backdrops you tend to make ;-) )

That's a very interesting photo you linked to, Reinhard. Thanks for posting that.

The photo shows that the coffee facility has grown over time. On the left, the big white tower that is now a signature part of the structure is missing. The tanks on the center tower are painted primer red instead of white as they are now. There is an addition on the far right that isn't in the photo. And there is now alot of metal siding on the lower portions of the towers that aren't in your photo. Cool to see what the plant used to look like. One of my operators from Saturday told me that the original brick structures of the coffee plant began life as a Ford Motor Company assembly plant.

That loco facility now belongs to UP, although they service BNSF stuff and a bunch of other roads as well. To the very left in your photo, is that a high nose Santa Fe GP7?

I think my background in the construction industry is what induces me to go "overkill" with the wood cores in the structures. In my head, everything has to be "as solid as a rock".

Re: WOOHOO! Good weather = time to build - Gary S - 01-02-2014

Progress has been much slower than expected. Considering all the time off from work, the estimate was that the towers would be substantially complete by tonight... not even close. Only 4 of the 13 floors is done, plus all the H-columns and I-beams have to be added to the outside.

Gary, I just can't understand what is taking you so long. Icon_lol I would have that one done by 2214 at the earliest.
Structures like that are so impressive but I don't have the talent to even attempt one.
That is and will be a job to be proud of and a real winner in any area of modeling. Thanks for sharing the build progress.

That is a seriously impressive build Gary! Thumbsup I just don't have the attention span for projects that big.

Cheers,

Kev

I echo Charlie's comment. I couldn't set a one of those pipes straight...

I like nice flat structures with square corners, doors and window frames...

Holy Crap!.....I'm impressed. And jealous. Wishing I had your skills and patience.

Thanks to all for following along.

Steamtrains Wrote:I echo Charlie's comment. I couldn't set a one of those pipes straight...

Gotta be honest with ya... hardly any of those pipes are set straight!

88fan Wrote:Wishing I had your skills and patience.

Not so much skill or patience at this point... but perseverance! Ugh. So far, about 80 hours has gone into the actual buildings, and another 80 on the towers. Never dreamed the this would be taking so long. Probably still another 80 hours left on the towers, and another 80 on finishing the rest of the facility. Motivation remains high, however!

Koos Wrote:You definitely have great structure building talents, and backdrop painting, and scenery,

Thank you kind Sir. One good thing about the coffee facility is that being almost 7 feet long, that's 7 feet of backdrop that doesn't have to be painted!

docWayne Wrote:Very impressive Gary. ........not that that should be surprising

Taken separatley, each individual piece of the towers is really not that impressive. For example, on the screw conveyors, I could have put nut-bolt-washer castings along the lids. All kinds of other detail items could be added. I'm hoping that the sheer size and complexity of the facility will produce the illusion that I am looking for.... 3 foot rule!!!!!

Real nice work Gary.. Looks like a place that would be a real fun place to run some rigid conduit. Nope

Re: WOOHOO! Good weather = time to build - Gary S - 01-06-2014

But you could smell coffee all day long. My father-in-law who is retired IBEW said he did some work in the coffee facility back in the 1970s. When he was checking out the model, he said he didn't work on the railroad side of the industry though.

Speaking of smelling coffee, the whole neighborhood over there smells of coffee.

Hi Gary,

just curious, have you posted any videos of your layout in action on youtube or similar? I've enjoyed the picture walk around, but better still would be a short local freight, running the length of the layout and seeing it through your scenery etc. Thumbsup

and idea perhaps? ;-)
