Somethings Wrong Here - eightyeightfan1 - 04-21-2009

Its July 12, 1959. Barney Secord was chasing the Central New England Milk train through Winsted. He took this picture as the train passed by the industrial area. When he developed the picture he noticed there was something wrong. He hadn't noticed it when he took the picture.(Kinda hard to take a picture and fly a Curtiss Jenny at the same time)
Maybe Barney wasn't where he thought he was?

Can you find the things wrong with the picture.

Have some fun.

There is no color!!!

Re: Somethings Wrong Here - scubadude - 04-21-2009

BNSF in 1959??

Re: Somethings Wrong Here - Charlie B - 04-21-2009

the BNSF loco is wrong for 59 as is the Railgon, track hoe and one of the automobiles. That is four. Leave some for others to find.

Aside from the obvious loco, it kinda looks like one of those cars is a bit too modern for 1959

And a Shay on a milk train? It'd be sour cream by the time it reached the dairy! Icon_lol

Re: Somethings Wrong Here - doctorwayne - 04-21-2009

I'm not sure, but it also looks like there's a consolidated (C.O.T.S.) stencil on the caboose, along with a too-modern style of lettering on the U.P. gondola (left rear of the photo). There are also no roofwalks on the boxcars in the background, and what appears to be a liquified gas (high pressure) tank car visible between the buildings (it does have a frame, though, so it may have been around in the late '50s). On the next track beyond the tank car, there is also what appears to be a centre-beam flatcar, loaded with wrapped lumber or other building material .

The good Dr. Got a couple(that I missed). But the caboose is lettered for the S&W
Charlie found four, one of which, viperman, and scubadude found(BNSF) and one other one that viperman found(2000 Pontiac).
BUT...There's one that no-ones mentioned yet.......But a couple of you were close.

Re: Somethings Wrong Here - doctorwayne - 04-21-2009

I can't see anything else - I had originally thought the depressed centre flatcar was out of place, but roller bearing trucks were in use long before the '50s, and I'm pretty sure the same for the span bolster arrangement on that car. I didn't mention it earlier, but those boxcars with no roofwalks are also of a later design - the oldest would be from the mid-'60s or later. I also, just now, 35 noticed the empty centre-beam flat behind and to the left of the building.

looks like the BNSF unit has one truck on the ground. Better call in the big hook.

Re: Somethings Wrong Here - MasonJar - 04-22-2009

Seems like the milk train might be a little too time-sensitive to be pulled by a Shay - not known for their speed. Wink

I think you're right, Steve. Thumbsup

Thats all the steam I had on the layout, besides the Big Boy. The Consolodation is down stairs in the base...Uh...Uh....In the shop getting the drivers serviced.
I couldn't see the Big Boy pulling a local milk train.

OK...You guys that guessed the BNSF, failed to mention...(OK...I can hear the "Ahhhs", and "Oh Mans" now), that the loco is to modern for 1959.
OK....I got ya....But that was the idea.

OK...Who's next?

You're right! my mistake.
I read his reply wrong( meaning that BNSF was wrong and not the loco) Guess Cahrlie got the "two for one" then.
