KY Rock & Asphalt - 4x4 On30 Layout - Drew - 04-25-2009

I decided to start working on this little mini layout again...this was one my grandson & I started on a year or so ago...
Originally, we were going to build it as a layout for his HO train set (Thomas The Tank) but now we've decided to do it as an On30 mini layout...
Here's the track plan...(nothing too complicated here, huh?)

Here's a shot of the bench work...

Here's some progress shots of how we cut, stacked & carved the foam scenery...

I used a rubber mold to cast tunnel portals, & to cobble together sort of a stone arch bridge...

Very nice. I see your framework looks to have originally been the underworkings of an original Thomas the tank engine table... but shortened a bit eh? On my current layout, I did the same as you for an arched wall using tunnel portals. My son and I built a pizza layout a while back but lately it's been under wraps. Perhaps I should bring it out again to see if there is a renewed interest. Watching yours with interest.

We've slung a little plaster, added some fascia boards, & here's some of our On30 stuff...

Drew, your grandson is going to enjoy the heck out of that layout...and he's always going to be able to tell the story about how his grandfather got him interested in model railroading with such a cool project! Its shaping up beautifully! Thumbsup

Thanks for the nice comments guys! Big Grin

I wasn't satisfied with how the stream just kind of dead-ended into the hill, so I got a scrap of foam, & used it to form a rock shelf, so it looks like the stream is flowing from under ground...

Re: KY Rock & Asphalt - 4x4 On30 Layout - Drew - 04-25-2009

We ballasted the track with wood ash & dirt, painted the bed of the stream black, & started adding some foliage...

We've got sort of a "tree factory" set up in the garage...it's gonna take a few of 'em! Eek
The good news is that the other side of the layout is going to be a quarry scene, & it'll need more rocks than trees! Thumbsup

That's about as far as we've gotten for now...hopfully more updates soon!

That's looking really good...!!! Goes to show what can be done in a limited space...and O gauge to boot..!!! Thumbsup

That is really great. I like your idea for the stream. I might just copy that, if you don't mind.

That looks GREAT! Where did you come across the tunnel portal mold? I'd like to get my hands on one of those! Will you be adding resin to the creek?

Thanks again for the nice comments! Smile

I made the rubber mold from one of those Woodland Scenics stone portals (HO) They're pretty easy to come by I think...
