This is back in the era of "winning is everything" Mike Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - nachoman - 08-22-2010 P5se Camelback Wrote:I'm told by the adults involved in Little League that I had gone to speak to about volunteering to umpire, as I had done in the late nineties for Girls' Fast-Pitch Little League Softball when I lived in Naples, FL, that here in Lehigh Acres, at least for the younger boys, they don't keep score so as not to cause any of the poor impressionable little boys from having their feeling hurt. From the parents I observe these days, I bet that is an excuse. The real reason is that the adults (potential scorekeepers) don't want to hang up their telephones long enough to pay attention . Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - Herc Driver - 08-23-2010 The world has gone down hill ever since the schools stopped the kids from playing Dodgeball. Now they're not keeping score at games...making sure every kid gets to play no matter what their skill level...and generally teaching kids that life is completely fair. Those kids on your ball field are playing in the days of Mantle, Mays, Kofax, Robinson, and a host of other greats. Give 'em a score board. Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - Steamtrains - 08-23-2010 That's a great Little Leaguers field you got there...!! And, yes, they do need a scoreboard... Not keeping score...Whose asinine idea was that...?? Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - Fifer - 08-23-2010 Steamtrains Wrote:And, yes, they do need a scoreboard...I do not know !!! Yep I need one. Thanks , Mike Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - P5se Camelback - 08-23-2010 That's the idea of some Koom-By-Yah, Touchy-Feely, let's-not-offend-any-one-or-hurt-any-ones-feelings Liberal Hacks who also think that everyone should get a trophy so no one feels "left out" or loses any self-esteem. We are raising children who are going to think that life is fair and no one will take advantage of them and "everyone is a winner!" That's a bunch of Bovine Excrement! Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - thumsup - 08-23-2010 Man it was never like that way back in the "day". We didn't have a score board mainly because we didn't have a real "baseball field". And I never was awarded a trophy, because I wasn't very good. But I did have a great time trying. Oh, and Mike I would have been honored to play on a field as grand as yours score board or not. We didn't have a score board mainly because we didn't I remember being 5 or 6 and playing tee ball. This would have been about 1980. While sipping my capri-sun after the game, I remember asking the coach or my parents whether my team won or not. Us wee lads didn't really know how the scoring worked (or which way to run). But, the coach or parents would always tell us we won. I later realized that nobody was actually keeping score, as the parents were too busy taking photos or socializing, and the coaches were too busy trying to keep the kids from picking their noses and playing with their hats. Plus, it was rare an "out" is ever recorded in a tee ball game among 6-year-olds , so the score was almost infinate . I never got beyond tee ball, but I have walked through enough parks on a saturday afternoon to realize little has changed. Most kids younger than about 3rd grade are still mostly clueless about the game (the good kids are probably already placed in an "exclusive" league), and the parents treat the games as a social event. I think Fifer did an excellent job with the "socializing" LPBs in the bleachers and the fence. You still need a scoreboard. Parks near me may have multiple fields, and usually one or two will be "nice fields" with some kind of scoreboard - especially if it has amenities like bleachers and an outfield fence. The ice cream van is a nice touch - but maybe add hot dog cart as well. Depending on your time era, you may also want to consider lighting. Many of the ball yards here have lights Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - Fifer - 08-24-2010 Thanks Guys , as time permits I may build a score board and this field will be a daytime only field in 1955. Thanks again all ! Mike Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - P5se Camelback - 08-24-2010 In reading over the above, I realized that I had much to say of a social nature but never spoke of the scene which sparked it all. An amazing job for sure, especially a "to scale" field from for-real Little League specs! No "selective compression!" A really stellar job! And, of course, in the early photos, I did notice the backstop and thought, "Whoa! Scratch-built backstop! Sweet!" Seriously ... a beautiful job on a rarely modeled land use. Mike Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - Fifer - 11-14-2010 Today , on the Albuquerque Carnuel and Tijeras , I added nearly all of the details to the ball field , park , highway , bowling alley , taco stand , and Schmelle meat packing. Here are some finished shots. Mike Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - Ralph - 11-14-2010 Love the ballpark Mike! You're very modest about that fine looking back stop! Ralph Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - nachoman - 11-14-2010 oops, responding to the wrong thread; ignore this. I'm up past my bedtime (waiting to pick a friend up from the airport) Re: ACTRR is being dismantled and re-constructed - Steamtrains - 11-14-2010 Hey Mike....Long time no see....
