Pt. Stanley Terminal Railway -- unexpected visit - RobertInOntario - 11-28-2010
My family & I were visiting friends in London, Ont. this weekend and we suddenly had a chance to visit the Port Stanley Terminal Railway (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.pstr.on.ca/">http://www.pstr.on.ca/</a><!-- m -->), a small tourist, heritage railway in the village of Pt. Stanley, about a 45-minute drive south of London on Lake Erie.
Some 50 or more years ago, this used to be an electric line that connected London with the tourist area of Pt. Stanley. The PSTR now operates a section of it using 4-5 very small industrial diesels. I have a sentimental connection with this railway as my Dad used to be a volunteer here in the 1980s and '90s, before he became ill. He volunteered in a few roles, but the main ones being conductor or flagman.
I last visited this railway in 2006 ... it's a little difficult to get to from Toronto as it's a good 2-1/2 hours to get there by car. They were running Santa trains. The train leaves Pt. Stanley station and arrives at a tiny station (a small shack!) called Union Station near the village of Union, where Santa was waiting for the train.

I've been by it a lot and managed one ride.
There was a children's TV show in the 50s and one of the regulars was a railfan/model railroader and a fan of the L&PS. The day before it abandoned passenger service (1957?) they showed some film of it.
