Indiana Northeastern 12-29-10 - railohio - 12-29-2010

I chased the Indiana Northeastern today from Ashley, Indiana to Hillsdale, Michigan. The crew started the day switching in Ashley and shoved to the junction at Steubenville; from there they pulled north to Hillsdale. Along the way the worked in Fremont and Reading. Here's some of what I saw:

Great photos! (as always). I really dig the old geeps, and the paint scheme.

Wow! I didn't think there were any operable high nose first gen GP's left!
Nice shots!

It was a fun chase. It's always a challenge working a train that doesn't line up with the light on a sunny day.

I read this once in Trains Magazine in the 60s:

The Geep: Every Railroad Men's locomotive-a great article.

Fast forward to 2010.

Every short line's locomotive: The Geep.

When Dick Dilworth design the Geep 61 years ago I don't think he thought any would be "doing useful work" in 2010.

Those old Geeps still looks like a first class locomotive. Thumbsup

Love that black, yellow and white paint scheme IN has chosen. I got slides of the former Pigeon River Geep at South Milford a few years ago when that part of the line was operated as the Pigeon River Railroad, but haven't been back up that way to try and get shots of the IN equipment.

Originally the Pigeon River operated from Ashley to South Milford and the rest of the system was operated by the Hillsdale County Railroad. When the Hillsdale County was declared insolvent the owners of the Pigeon River bought it and began operating the combined system as the Indiana Northeastern. Today the corporate office is in South Milford and the operations office is in Hillsdale.
