Yep, I learned it from my dad way back when. We had an old well up the valley in a 2 acre section we used as a garden. We used a garden hose with a little bit of clear tubing at each end to calculate the elevation difference between there and the ranch house down below to see if there would be sufficient drop for a gravity siphon. There was.

Yesterdays order of business was to get the left hand loop leveled in at a perfect 4% grade. After I had it all perfected, I came to realize that the whole thing was about 4" too tall. Sooo, I dropped the whole thing 4" and re leveled. Why do something once when you can take twice as long by doing it twice?

Todays task was to construct a tunnel. Since this RR's on a pretty tight budget, I had to throw the bricks and mortar idea out the window and use something I had plenty of... 4X4's!

That is looking awesome!! Remember to run some trains to test clearances before you cover up that tunnel, that one spot in the last pic looks a little tight.

Looking forward to seeing more, and now it looks like I am going to have to build a back yard layout. I have a nice backyard for something like this and now you've got my creative juices flowing... lol.

Nice work! Thumbsup

We've been running a little 0-4-0 around. It requires at least 7" of clearance. I plan to have 9" inside the tunnel with 3" on either side of the rails to the edge of the tunnel wall. Some things still need to be fudged a little.
Twice a year, the G scale club has a couple of weekends of home layout tours. My two sons love seeing everybody elses layouts. My 6 year old really wants us to participate as part of the tour but right now he says that nobody will come to see ours because it is not interesting enough! You should hear his plans for expansion!

Oh, and if I ever need to, I plan on leaving the area above the middle of the tunnel somewhat clear so that I can dig it up and get in there if the need arises.

Looking good TN, im liking that tunnel!! Im anxious to see it take some more shape Thumbsup Misngth

Will double-stacks fit in that tunnel? :-) Just kidding, it is looking great, what is the radius on your curves. Outdoor trains is something I definately need to look into.

Re: Scorpion Bend - my backyard RR - TrainNut - 01-23-2009

I dunno... how tall is a G scale double stack? If it's less than 9", it'll fit! Radii are 6'6" and 8' diameter. I've used the 8' sections to ease into the tighter 6'6".

Seeing all that Gscale work makes me seriously want to have a track in my backyard running around the pine needles and cypress trees. That's going to really look neat when it's all done.

Wow TrainNut

You have been busy. Love the G scale Layout you are building. I have been waiting for mine to dry out enough to work on again.

So far it looks great.

Nahh, there's a place just down the road from me, I usually visit on Sundays, that has a whole hillside of 'em. When I asked if I could have some for my backyard train, I got some funny looks but was given permission anyways.
