Bachmann CVs - Lester Perry - 06-30-2013
I had a Bachmann 2-8-0 that got out of quarter. I sent it in with I think 20 dollars. They sent me a new one with a decoder already installed. I can't find anything about this decoder. I have programed the address but that is all I can get. This is not a tsunami, I don't know what it is and that is the problem. :?

What kind of DCC system are you using??? Is it a sound decoder?

I purchased a few of B'mann "DCC On Board" locos sometime back. After many tries at getting that decoder "programmed", I gave up, took them out and installed "real" decoders from D'trax...
Nice engines...lousy decoders...

There is a trick with the old Bachmann decoders:
Bridge the programming track with a resistor of app. 800 - 1000 ohms and then you will be able to programm it.
But Gus is right these are really lousy decoders. They are right out of the stone age aera of DCC technologies.
So throw them away and replace them with real decoders of your choice.

Actually they're very nice real basic decoders if used as intended for multi train operation,acceleration,deceleration,consisting and rule 17.I had no problem programming the mention features or using Rule 17 with my Tech 6.
These decoders diffidently isn't for the advanced DCC user and there lays the rub.These are basic decoders for basic DCC operation.
Their sound decoders is superior and supports all CVs.

Can't agree with you in all aspects.
The sound decoders which Bachmann is outfitting their locos now are Soundrax Tsunamis, here i agree fully with you. The full version in the Spectrum Line and also the downgraded OEM Tsunamis in the Bachmann Line are excellent decoders.
The the 21-pin MTC decoders Bachmann offers in their British Outline Range, are very similar to the ESU Lopi Basic decoders and they are also o.k.
But i had several original Bachmman decoders in "DCC On Board" Spectrum locomotives. They are just like the first generation Lenz decoders, for example LE-130 and LE-131 mobile decoders, out of the early 1980's.
These decoders were not very affordable.
The 1980's were the stone age of DCC equipment and Spectrum locos offered about 2005 had 20 years of DCC backstep on board.
Low frequency motor management let the motors even not humming, but really grumbling. May be good for those old pancake motors of earlier years, but not for the modern low current motors. And for coreless coil motors low frequencies are the pure poison.
Then the lack of BEMF, a requirement for smooth low speed operations.
It may be o.k. for toy train action (fast, faster and still faster), but smooth and slow driving is an other chapter.

Lutz,I don't have any issues with my 2 70 Tonners of,course I did set the acceleration and deceleration momentum and start and top voltage..I did not need back emf to smooth these engines to a crawl.Full throttle might be 35 smph.Start probably 1 smph..I did this with my trusty MRC Tech 6 in the DCC mode.
Again,for what they are meant for they're nice basic decoders and not for advanced DCC users like yourself.

Didn't you have control before or are you talking about not being in control because you didn't have the decoder CV information?
