I used to imitate the paint and the rust : powder (pigment for oil, it's cheaper) and pastel chalk that I reduced with a sand paper. Jean-Pierre Duval has done a superb work. I have to finish it, paint it and weather it. You rally have a good sense of observation for such details. Best luck with the second plymouth. Will you paint it in similar fashion as the first one or try a different paint scheme?
