Bruce

What type of boxcar is that?  I never saw one with a smooth end before.

RE: Trains on this day in the past: - doctorwayne - 11-28-2022

Well, there were lots of boxcars with smooth-ish ends, but that car looks like a couple sheets of plywood and a gallon of paint  was all that was needed to make it useful.

Most cars with smooth ends usually showed at least some rivets, indicating that there were structural steel members inside, holding everything together.
Here's one that I scratchbuilt, using sheet styrene, aluminum insulator's tape, and Archer rivet decals...

I wonder if that smooth end is hinged at the bottom, and can be dropped-down as a loading ramp?

Perhaps Bruce can enlighten us.

CAR and Wayne,

I looked thru my photos for another shot of the car, but had none.   The car does have welded steel ends. This car was going to Atlantic Sweetner in Folsom, NJ and was loaded with bagged sugar.  It is designated as a XP boxcar.  Railroad Pictures Archives does have several shots of similar cars SOU 9023, 9040.

Thanks for that additional info regarding the welded steel ends, Bruce, as I was puzzled that there were no visible rivet heads on the car's end.
