Amtrak train 41, the Broadway Limited westbound at MP 52.3 on the Fort Wayne line with an SDP40F in the lead 2/27/1978. Track speed was 10 MPH and it was 20 below.

That poor ex Reading C630 at the back of the consist looks like it is dumping its water no doubt hastening its early demise.

The engine had quit and the outside air temp was below freezing so the automatic valve opened to prevent engine damage. I had a friend that was the head mechanic at Conway yards and he loved these old ALCos. He thought they were the easiest locomotives to work on. I liked our ALCo S-1 for that reason too. The problem was getting parts for a locomotive built in 1943, but it still does it's duties 73 years later. Cheers

There were still quite a few unpatched units almost a year into Conrail. Here is an eastbound at East Palestine's Pleasant Drive railroad crossing. March 6, 1977
