Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - ezdays - 05-20-2014 Five years ago we had a three-way challenge that was very successful, so in keeping with our five-year anniversary celebration, we’ve had a request to do it again. We also had a similar one over at the other place, and it was also successful. Not being one to mess with success, we’re repeating to one from the summer of 2009 just as it was then. OK, here’s the dealio (a word used by Gru in the movie “Despicable Me”) . We’re going to have a structure building challenge that we hope will suite everyone at every level of skill or modeling preferences. This one is all about structures. When we talk about structures, we’re not just talking buildings. Houses and factories are fine, but also think other things; water or oil tanks, bridges, boat docks, or grain elevators are just a few examples of what you can build. In order to keep things fair, we are limiting participation to two categories only. If you choose the kitbuild challenge, you can enter the kitbash one as well, but not the scratchbuild. If you enter the scratchbuild, you can also enter the kitbash, but not the kitbuild. The reasoning here is to keep the different skill levels apart and to let everyone complete at the level they feel is challenging to them, or at their preferred method of construction. Kitbuild challenge will be as follows: Just build a kit using only the parts in the box for the structure only. You may paint and weather the structure and make cosmetic changes, but you cannot add anything that does not come with the kit. You can add other details such as scenery around the structure. This will allow you to do from a "let it look like the picture on the box", to "I built it like the instructions says, but I've enhanced it with weathering, different paint and scenery". The choice is yours. Kitbash challenge will be as follows: Take any structure kit and make it into something different, or even take two or more kits and combine them for something else. You can use parts from other kits, but mainly, you must use your imagination. We cannot define this any more than that; the rest is up to you to figure out. Scratchbuilt challenge will be as follows:
Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - ezdays - 05-20-2014 Official registration list for those in the challenge: This list has been moved to Registration list for three-way structure challenge Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - ezdays - 05-20-2014 If you have any questions about this challenge, please post them here. Also, please post you choices for which category you're going to enter in. You can enter anytime before the end of this challenge. For example, you may do a scratchbuilt challenge now and finish early enough to enter the kitbash one. Or, you can commit to both at the same time. You also might decide to jump in late in the game, we're open to anyone entering at any time. Also, if you enter one category and change your mind, just let me know here or send me a PM, I can change the list as we go. Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - Sumpter250 - 05-20-2014 So.......... would building a wood kit of a narrow gauge caboose, as a storage shed, with a loading dock, be called a kitbash, or if it was not a kit, a "scratchbash" ?? I'll have to "inventory" my unbuilt kits, and/or old construction articles, for ideas. Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - jwb - 05-20-2014 What about a project that's already started? Can the challenge include finishing it, especially if it's been stalled for a while? Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - nachoman - 05-20-2014 Hmm. I gotta think about this one. As for what my layout needs - I need to finish my smelter complex. This will either be a large, involved scratchbuild or kitbash but of too much work for the scope of this challenge. I think I also want to add a windmill, so that may be a good kitbuild. I also need a small station/depot and I was planning on using scrap parts or just scratchbuilding. I also have one "hole" in my town that I hadn't decided what to put there, either a small house or a water tank. Glad to see this challenge. I'm going to try and enter two, but not sure which ones. Can the challenge include finishing it, especially if it's been stalled for a while? We had a challenge a while back that was specifically for projects that were started but never finished (orphans). I think for this one, we'll restrict it to new projects only. Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - jwb - 05-20-2014 I will enter the scratchbuilding challenge. Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - Tyson Rayles - 05-20-2014 For us serious procrastinators at what time on Labor Day does the contest end? And if we start less than 24 hours from the deadline and still get done on time do we get extra kudo's, brownie points or whatever? You get all that and more, just for saying you'll do something.... anytime, early or late, it doesn't matter. I suppose if you get the job done in 24 hours, we might have a gold star to put on you certificate. As for the time, it's usually after I've had my second cup of morning coffee, but in this case since we're only giving you three months to get the project done, I will consider adding a few hours and making the deadline at midnight, GMT on September 1st. I think that equates to around 8 PM EST, or 5 PM Arizona time (except for the Navaho Territory, which remains on MST, even in the summer). Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - Tyson Rayles - 05-20-2014 Hmmmmmmmmm, now to figure out what to do? Well no rush, I got 3 months less 24 hours. Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - mountaingoatgreg - 05-20-2014 Well I asked for it so here is my contribution: http://bigbluetrains.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=7614 Hoping to be done in 3 months, less 24 hours Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - ezdays - 05-21-2014 Tyson Rayles Wrote:Hmmmmmmmmm, now to figure out what to do? Not exactly, you have a bit over 99 days to get this done, so based on your calculations, you should finish about a week earlier than you thought.... that is, if you start when thou thought you had to. :o Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - Sumpter250 - 05-21-2014 Yup !, This is already off to a "good" start. :o Re: Our 2014 three-way structure challenge - e-paw - 05-21-2014 Oh-no... It's structures only.... .. I just about finished this one and I'm a bit burned out on structures right now. :| I may have to sit this one out or do a late entry with something small. |
