DRY TRANSFERS....

OK....So I sit down to letter a few locos that are needing road name and number. I pull out my good ol' dry transfers I purchased a couple of months ago, and....
I'm out of L's, and only have 1 each of C & P...!! I got all the other letters I don't need...

At this rate it's gonna cost more to letter them than what I paid for the locos....

So...does anybody know of transfer lettering that's got a single letter per sheet, instead of only a couple or three..?? Or at least more than a couple of each per sheet..??

One trick is to use only part of a letter, or combine two. For instance, use only part of a G to make a C. Use an exacto knife to scrape away the portion you don't need.

As Kevin notes, you can use other letters to make the ones you need, depending, of course, on the font style.
"A"s and "V"s are often interchangeable, "B"s, "P"s, and "R"s can be used, with parts of other letters, interchangeably, as can "I"s, "L"s, "T"s, "E"s, and "F"s. For numerals, "3" and "8", and "6" and "9" are about the only ones.

With free-lanced roads ELORA GORGE & EASTERN and GRAND VALLEY, I quickly learned that "G"s can be made from "C"s, "O"s, and "Q"s but that ampersands (&) are both scarce and difficult to cobble together from other letters. That's why most of my freight cars are lettered like this:








Only a handful of cars received ampersands, and these reefers may be the only ones still lettered in that manner:

Thanks for the tips on this....

I had pretty much worked out how to convert the letters I need, but, like you say, the "&" is very hard....Maybe superimposing parts of a couple letters....
I'd really never noticed your "unusual" lettering. Now I know why....
