Trains This Day/Month in the Past
Charlie:
I believe the structure at the right is Tecumseth Tower. It governed the junction between the Oakville sub (Lakeshore line) and the CN Weston sub and the CP Mactier sub (Northwest bound) as they are funnelled into Union Station.
I think that the abattoir behind has disappeared as has most of the industrial destination in downtown Toronto.

In model railroading, there are between six and two hundred ways of performing a given task.
Most modellers can get two of them to work.

Thanks for the information David. I looked at the site on Google Earth and I think you could still take photos of trains there but you would have to be in a wooded area that is between the park and the railroad. A lot has changed over the years but I imagine there is still a lot of rail activity.

10/20/1979. We were still burning film in Toronto. I wish I could have afforded more film and time too. I think this is all changed now there is a stadium in here.

Looking east towards the station. There is now an underpass going from left to upper right.
The track going off to the right is a return loop that allowed The Canadian and other trains to be completely turned around. It went around the CN Roundhouse (immediately to your right) and the coachyard.
The roundhouse was destroyed for the stadium and the turntable pit was made into the shower room for the visitng teams.
(I commuted through here for over 25 years and saw all this change)
To the left was a freight yard (canopy platforms and beyond) which I think became a yard for GO Transit.

Ahhh....  One of the 4 RS-11's (LV 403) bought by the LV right off the line.  The got 6 more high short hoods from the PRR later, but these low ones were great looking (especially in the last paint scheme).  The repaints into CR stencils weren't too debilitating - I don't think any of the 4 got the blue dip treatment before being scrapped.  Looks like this photo was taken near the Bethlehem Steel plant right downtown, but I think this unit was pretty local and stayed near the Allentown hump yard.  The similar C420's ended up being shipped to the Delaware and Hudson during the standup of Conrail along with a bunch of GP38-2's from the LV and Reading.
