I've always thought those "friends" lists to be too contrived. The Model Railroader site has that feature, and I refuse to participate. Of course, some people are offended if you ignore their "friendship" request, so one is obliged to send a note of explanation - in effect, they've wheedled a response out of me when none would have been required had that feature not existed. 
As for providing information or answering questions, I think that pretty-well everyone here is more than willing without need of such a contrivance. This is already a friendly place to be.
