I was having dinner with a Ukrainian family and one of the dishes was something called varenyky which is very similar to the pierogi. It's a crescent shaped dumpling stuffed with mashed potato, cheese, cabbage, sauerkraut, any of a variety of meats. Sometimes they do combinations. For a real treat it can have a fruit filling. It's very popular in Ukraine and Russia.
