kamerad, My guess is that is was probably bad track.. Here is a pic from the same location from the cab of one of our F-3's on an excursion last year. We are setting roughly right over the spot where the cars derailed. From the looks of the rail it was just a matter of time before a train was on the ground. I believe this is NS owned trackage and not the D&L's. When I went past there today the cars had been righted and rerailed, and a bulldozer was fixing the ballast. The police had the aria pretty well closed off so I was unable to get a closer look or any pics. From what I could tell it looked like all that was left to do was re-ray the track.
