The only time I used spline, it was cut 1/2" thick from a 1x6 (or so). I managed to make a 36" radius bend in it and glued it so that it kept the bend. What I was doing (spanning 2 doorways) didn't require risers, but I would probably go for 1x2 or 1x3 uprights with a 1x1 cleat at the top. (see book on L-girder benchwork).
