Todd, the slight curve downward on the end is what holds them and the ballast is tamped and gets into the channel. According to the guys that tamped them they hold really well. I did find however that steel ties that only carried 130 trains were not able to be resold and were scrapped. I had retired before this project was started so I am just an observer.
