Tom B, I am glad you had a safe trip. I would have to take a month at least to drive that far.
The smoke and smell here is horrible. I went out to the mailbox and by the time I had returned I was having problems breathing so we are in the house, sealed up with the HEPA filter running. It is way worse than anything we got with the train wreck.
I installed a decoder in an old blue box Athearn and the decoder was full of smoke. I checked for shorts and can't find a thing that would have caused this. I cleaned the gear train and have it running effortlessly, drawing less than half an amp, and it was a 2 amp decoder so I think it may have been bad. I will try another one, but in the meantime I am installing a sound decoder in a passenger sharknose locomotive. Sadly the train room has no air filter so projects are on hold. I turned down free HEPA filters when the derailment happened because I didn't need one, now I wish I had got one for the train room.
