Balast pile - nice choice for the front scene. Some MOW workers with shovels and a pickup truck would really set it off and tell a story.
NICE difference in lawn heights. As I stare at the photos I can imagine all kinds of detailing possibilities; I'm getting drawn into the scene and that's really great. It's working!
As for the backdrop - you can always try a simple paper scene inserted behind the structures and see how it looks. I think getting the perspective right (vanishing point, horizon line, etc.) is the trickiest part. How realistic you want it to look is semantics by comparison.
