you can make a form of Link and Pin coupling from the Kadees bypulling out the trip pin, releasing and removing the knuckle, losing the spring

Then you can bend up a link from wire and use a couple of small nails for pins.
Doesn't look quite as good as a proprietary L&P, but it has all the operational inconveniences.
