Don't be shocked, I actually did something on my layout that wasn't part of a challenge... well sort of 
. Back in July of '09, I scratchbuilt a Denny's as part of a challenge. The first two pics here shows it as I built it, a diorama. So here's the part that's not part of a challenge, after four years, I finally planted Denny's on my layout. :o It looked like the only place I had room enough for it and still maintained most of the parking lot around it. Diners now have a great view of the passing trains... well they will once I get that part completed. 
The buildings in the background are on two layers to give them some depth. Some are pasted on the backdrop, the rest are on a piece of foamboard to bring them forward a bit.
