For what it's worth, I've had success rolling lead sheet over brass wire (air pipe).

Just roll until desired diameter is reached and hide the seam on the side nearest the engine.

The air pipe is guaranteed to be on centre.

Slide the tank to the end of the wire for final shaping

Add straps etc to taste.
