Re: Threading wires... I've always taken a metal coat hanger, straightened it out and run it up through the scenery from the bottom. I then tape the wires to the coat hanger and simply pull it back down through.
Re: Swinging door... I must not be seeing the whole picture here. I would have thrown something in front of the door like a shoe, book, cat, or a door stop but it sounds like, for some reason, you were not able to do that hence the complicated solution.
