I like the old Geeps, but my favourite was the U-25-b, not for looks, but when they got some age on the mufflers, their sound was only surpassed by steam.
My first trip to the Horseshoe Curve was made more memorable by a heavy ore train climbing the grade with 4 U-25s on the head end and 4 pushing. I never saw that combination after that. Somewhere I have a tape recording of that if it hasn't been lost in one of the moves.
The P&LE U28Bs sounded pretty good too, but there wasn't much of a grade in our area on the P&LE.

Hi again Ed.
I never tire of seeing the "red locomotives" I see mostly Penn Central black with Norfolk Southern patches.
Kevin and I spent the day trackside and managed to see lots of trains, including the Ringling Brothers red train heading west.
765 will be returning through here on Thursday.

I sure hope you get the Heritage unit someday. Do any CSX locomotives get up your way any more?
All the NS Heritage locomotives seem to be going out Ralph's way every now and again.
It's nice to see the CN power. I like the stripes, a painters nightmare

Great picture! I recently acquired a CN GP40-2 with the wide cab (man do I love those wide cabs!) and when Rapido announced their GMD-1 I was thinking of lashing them up just like this picture. Then, of course, I saw the price

, but as I said before...resistance is futile!

Hello Charlie and Mark---thanks for responding.Charlie,I haven't seen any CSX power in Hamilton for a long time---Norfolk Southern will occasionally show up in this area though.CSX was common long ago running trains on the old Canada Southern line which ran from Fort Erie (Buffalo) to Windsor (Detroit). This line was south of Hamilton.
Mark---I actually thought of you when I took this picture as you recently posted a thread on the upcoming Rapido model of the GMD1---these locomotives were produced when the CNR was still operating steam in the late fifties---I can imagine they looked great double-heading with a CNR Mikado which probably happened long ago at the same location my picture was taken.
I found some photos of Illinois Central's SD70's in their original colours---personally I like the CN version
Here's the GMD1 again

Our local shortline had a couple GMD-1 locomotives running for a couple years with the previous operator. I never got home to take any pictures of them. I wish I had. Those are a different looking locomotive. Modern locomotives are all starting to really look alike, It is getting like the automobiles. I guess form follows function.

Mr. Nutbar,
Please stop posting those photos of the GMD-1 as I have a problem (one of many).
I am not even a big CN fan but I have always loved the Canadian comfort cab locomotives. Then I saw a pic of the GMD-1 and decided that my layout needed to be set so I could locate it anywhere in North America and run all sorts of engines from different railroads. The Southern Railway is my first love, but the Canadian National is quickly starting to look like a mistress.
Now lets see...a CN GP40-2 & GMD-1 could deliver the cars and a CP chop-nose GP9u could do the switching. Oh no, not another Canadian railroad.
PS, Ignore the first sentence. I always enjoy your photos.

Great shots Ed. I am in North Carolina along the line that had a couple heritage units on it until I showed up. They went through my hometown this past week end along with 3 others I haven't seen yet.

I even figured that would happen.

Congratulations to our neighbor to the north! I had a great Confederation Day once when I drove to Whitehorse, YT to ride steam on the WP&Y -- Confederation Day railfanning the BCOL, then the 4th of July crawling around the Whitehorse yard!

My brother Jim drove in from Toronto on Friday to catch the tall ships entering Hamilton harbour---here's some of his beautiful shots
I'm going to have to get my brother to go out railfanning one day---I think his photos are great
