Years ago I was a Parts sales manager for a for dealer. I spent a week cleaning up clutter that had accumulated.
The boss came through one day and raved about how good it looked. He went back to his office in a bad mood.
I told him that when I had time to clean, we were losing money. Misngth
As I age I have gotten a little better organized. Everything that I use either goes back where it belongs or is lost until it is accidentally refound.

A few shots of my work area and some projects waiting to to done. My work area was in the larger part of my basement up until just after the New Year. I decided to move it into a spare room in the basement as the larger area will be the home of my new layout once I get the track plan sorted out. The room is about 9.5' by 12'.

This my main work table. A large 5 drawer desk ( 30" x 60" top ) which was a bear to get down here in the basement. With the drawers removed and the legs off it still must weigh at least 80 pounds. I try to keep most of my steam locomotive detail parts and tools in the bins at the back of the desk along with my supply of NWSL screws and such. Above the back of the desk on the wall is three shelfs ( 2 show in the picture ). The lower one holds some RTR freight cars and some locomotives as well as some spare tenders and a brass CNR U-1-f mountain locomotive ( 4-8-2 ) frame with drivers, side rods and valve gear.Next to the brass CNR 4-8-2 frame is my completed CNR N-5-d 2-8-0. The shelf above that has a 3 foot test track with a handlayed #8 turnout. Right now it is home to two Rapido Trains CNR passenger cars and a Branchline Trains CNR sleeper car that is 85% built. The top shelf for the most part is the storage place for a large pile of code 83 flex track.

Most of the desk drawers are organized like this one. Some hold more parts and small tools. This one is home to some paint and glue and a few small tools. Unfortunatly it seems like not matter how much staorage space I have it is never enough. Eek

My current project. A brass CNR J-4-e Pacific 4-6-2. It has received a new can motor, NWSL gearbox and has been setup for DCC and its new Tsunami sound decoder. I have a few minor details to finish and it will be ready to be broken down for painting and decaling.

A few more shots of my work area.

This table is on the wall opposite the desk. At the moment I have my drill press and resistance soldering unit on it as well as my laptop computer. The table has folding legs and is removable as the room also has a fold out couch. I also use the room as a guest room in a pinch. Goldth

This cupboard is on one wall and holds some of the many kits I have waiting to be built as well as some wood building kits and some of my Digitrax DCC stuff. The top shelf holds about a third of my Intermountain Canadian style 40' boxcar kits I need to build, paint and decal. I plan to do them in batches of 10 to 15 cars at a time. The rest of my kits are in a box in the storage room for now. I ran out of room for them in my work area.

This is a another project I just got a few weeks back that is now taking up valuable storage space. A Diamond Scale Models 105' turntable kit. A much needed item for my new layout plan. Big Grin

The rest of the room is way to messy to post pictures of. Eek My paint booth is portable so when it comes time to paint I use the best avaliable window I can get my paint booth in front of. I also keep all my model RR magazines in the same room so if I need a break there is plenty of reading material at hand. Smile

Ha! Those pictures (a bit dated now since the paint booth build) were taken just after I cleaned up a bit. It's usually looks like a cyclone has just gone through everything. Big Grin

Here is my work bench last week. I was checking my old Lionel parts to see what I have, and if something could be rebuilt from them. If I can get a motor running I might get the 2-4-2 running. I don't have a tender for it .

I put the Lionel stuff away and now look to detail a Athearn USRA Mikado for the Pennsy. I'll do a thread on just the detailing.

Here is a photo of the completed locomotive.

I'm jealous of all these work areas -- I don't have anything that even comes close to what is shown in these pics !

Due to space limitations, I have to temporarily set up wherever I can get space -- the dining room table (a VERY risky place, especially if I spill oil or glue there!! Eek Eek ), a kitchen counter, in the basement, etc.

One day we hope to move to a bigger house (outside of Toronto 357 Big Grin Goldth ), but this won't be for a few years yet. Nope In the meantime, I have to make do with what little space I can find and things have to be of a temporary nature.

Rob , I had to build models for years that way and did not enjoy it any less. I was willed the table I have by a friend who passed away and would gladly go back to the kitchen table to have him back.

Hey Mike,

You honour your friend and his memory everyday just by thinking about him and putting that table to good use. That's how I look at things like that and maybe, that is all that really matters. Thumbsup

Thanks, Mike. I was just drooling a little but certainly can't complain! You just have to be a bit more organized setting up, keeping tidy and putting things away. I just look forward to the day when we should have more space.

Cheers, Rob

Yes, I think you're right. I kind of think that's what I'm doing by carrying on my Dad's railway interests and using his model trains (he passed away in 1999). Rob
