painting Pennsylvania steam locos
#1
I read some where that the frame, lead, trailing and tender trucks were painted black and the rest of the locomotive was painted Brunswick Green. I have a Bowser kit loco that has entered the painting stage and was just wondering if some one else painted their locomotives this way? Also is the cab roof red and the smoke box painted metalic? I would appreciate the info.

Thanks Leon

Leon, Hi ! Ah, the mysteries of the PRR...and black or green on Pennsy steam. The folks who can quote you chapter and verse reside at the PRRTHS (great resource, but sometimes difficult access), or this web group of sites - http://kc.pennsyrr.com/. There you'll learn the truth of DGLE (Dark Green Locomotive Enamel) and it's appropriate application. Honestly, I don't know - but you'll find out so much good PRR stuff, that you'll assemble and paint phenomenal locos, and (hopefully) share your hard-earned knowledge with us, (Pics are Great) here at the B.B.Gauge. ...Or, someone may have a better answer...good hunting ! Thanks for the info Bob. I searched the suggested sight and have info on the paint colors but until now have found nothing on the paint schemes.

It is my contention that since about the first world war the PRR painted all locomotives DGLE. The smokebox was either graphite or silver I can't remember. The cab roof was an oxide red color, as was the tender deck. Running gear was black, siderods and valve gear unpainted. Some of this changed around WWII.

This only accurate to the best of my knowledge, and if you ask anyone that knows me the best of my knowledge isn't very good. Icon_lol But one thing is for sure, what you would consider modern PRR steam (classes A-T inclusive) was definitely painted DGLE.

well Bob and Puddlejumper I think I have a web site for you. http://WWW.railpictures.net. I am sure it will give you plenty of pics of loco's to while away your time for a few hours. Let me know how you like it.
Thanks for your input about my painting problem. One thing though, just what all would comprise of the undercarriage? Would this also include the tender trucks?

again thanks

Leon, Thanks for the link. Yes, "undercarriage" includes all underparts, frame trucks etc. I wasn't sure about the exposed fram on the side of some tenders...answered my own question...http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.ph...596&nseq=0, it would be DGLE, not black. Happy painting ! Bob

That photo was post-WWII and reminded me of the changes I mentioned- the red roof and possibly tender deck as well were switched to DGLE, the smokebox from silver to graphite.
