Scratched Fish Cannery
#1
I really like the Scratchin -n- Bashin section. I've never been able to build anything the way the kit manf. intended , so everything I do is bashed or scratch. Some folks say cobbled would be more apt tho. Eek
Here is a couple pics of the Ramona Bay Fishermans Collective that I scratched for the S.N.O.B.'s Tule Springs & Western Railroad.
I used Scribed wood over a stryene core. The shingles are cedar cigar wrapper , applied one by one, windows are Grandt line with microscope slide glass panes. There is an operating wall clock in the office on the left side, the screen door has actual screen in it .( It was made out of the filter screen of an old GM auto-transmission --super fine stuff!! They don't use it anymore now they are some kind of foam stuff, try an old trans shop they may have some old ones left -thats where I found this one)
The open door on the right side has a simulated Arc welder working inside , not flashing lights but a rig that puts out sparks like welding slag along with the welding arc.
The last thing I'm gonna mention is the working brass carved weather-vane, a swordfish. Hope I haven't bragged too much.
I'm sorry about the quality of the pics, I had them on a disc but I lost it so I had to lift them by reshooting them from another forum I put them on a long time ago. The Toole Springs & Western was dismantled after Frank Burke passed on & the building now is residing on a friends layout ---for now-- It WILL go to Colorado with me next year.

I always look forward to your posts. Your work is just , I can't think of a proper word to do it justice. My wife loves it too. She isn't into modeling but she is quite an artist so when she likes something take it to the show. Looking forward to more.

Nice.
But you didn't mention the scale. I was wondering about the "working wall clock".
Took some imagination to make an HO scale one...Or even O scale!

The Ramona Bay Fishermans Collective is HO Scale. I used a very small battery powered ladies watch which I mounted in a small box on the outside of the back wall of the office. I photocopied the dial in a reduced size & cut the three hands down . I made a clock housing on the inside that has only enough of a hole to make the cut down portion of the watch visible.

The name of the cannery came from the fact that The dock & wharf area of the layout was named Ramona Bay , after Frank Burkes wife. Frank was a bit right wing & his wife was very liberal , so the Collective part of the name was just a bit of a jab at Franks politics. He loved the cannery but could not say much about the name & Ramona loved it!! Icon_lol

The Office building that you can see a corner of next to it has couple of tiny operating window exhaust fans that each occupy only one window pane of a four pane window. There is also an operating ceiling fan in the lobby of it. I did quite a bit of animation on the layout.

Darn!! Nope I wish I would have thought of that, I would have put a passel in the scene.

In the first post I mentioned the "arc" welder. This was made by attaching about 3/8 of an inch diameter worn down cutoff disk to a pager motor , mounting a brass tube above it with a cig. lighter flint in it --A bit of blue cellaphane to give it a blue "arc flame" & with the welding spatter of the sparks it was pretty effective. we planned to put a truck with a portable welder on in the scene & add the sound of the welder truck , but Frank Passed on before that was done.

Yeah, and all the sea gulls (mine, mine, mine ,mine) they'd be fighting with, to get a bit of that fish! Goldth
