Building the NM&RC

Well, we're back home after a week of camping. We have a small camper trailer, and went for a round trip about 1200 km long (750 miles), left on sunday and returned yesterday. A lovely and scenic route crossing the Hardanger plateau to the western Norway, with the return trip over the Haukeli mountains a little more south. For those interested, I have posted some pics in a Norwegian camping forum (sorry, Norwegian only), pics at the bottom of the thread. Totally OT, except for a couple of train station and railway ferry pics at the end, but a nice way to show off our beautiful country... Wink Smile

Anyway, on our way back home, we dropped by the Norwegian Roundhouse importer and picked up a few things; enough track and turnouts to finish tracklaying, a couple of open freight car kits, two passenger car kits and a conductor's car kit, and well as this battery driven weird thing:

Vigdis is working on this little critter right now, while I work on the framework outside. It's hotter than ... here right now, so progress is very slow, but hopefully we'll have something to show for by the end of the day.

Huh ?

There were 4 ferries over time:
DF (Dampferje - Steam Ferry) Rjukanfos (Rjukan Falls) - named for the waterfall producing electricity for the industries
DF Hydro - named for the company that owned the industries in the valley - sunk in 1944 to stop the Germans from getting heavy water for atomic research
DF Ammonia - named for one of the core products of the company and
MF (Motorferje - Motor Ferry) Storegut - meaning "big boy"

Got some more work done today:

The weather forecast predicts another fine day for outdoor activities tomorrow, so I'll see if I can finish the covering and go over all the joints with a caulking gun and some sealant, then it's track laying time!! 2285_

Vigdis has also made some progress on the railcar. The frame has been given two coats of primer with some light sanding in between, and three thin coats of black. The driver's cabin is left untreated in the assembly instructions, but we wanted a gray finish:

Along with a bright red engine, I think this will be a fun little splash of color amongst all the greenery on the layout! Smile

The resistance had to do it, even though it killed 14 of our own civilians (passengers and crew) in addition to the four German soldiers escorting the RR cars with the heavy water across the lake - we could not afford to take any chances on the Germans getting atomic weapons.

In total it cost 88 allied lives to stop the heavy water production - 44 British commando soldiers and pilots who died when their gliders iced down and crashed in the mountains on the way to Rjukan in november of '42, 22 Norwegian civilians and 10 US Army Air Force crewmen when the USAAF bombed Rjukan in November of 1943, and the 14 civilians who went down with MF Hydro in February 1944.

Finished covering the framework and sealing all the joints today:

Tomorrow is tracklaying day, yay!!! 2285_ 2285_

The railcar is also coming along quite nicely:

The roof support is treated with thinned red/brown paint, with several coats of clear varnish on top. The two battery boxes will go inside the benches, one on each side. She has also started testfitting the whitemetal parts for the engine, some sanding and adjusting is needed to get a good fit.

Here's today's progress:

No pics of the layout and tracklaying today, I only got about half way around the main. It's simply too hot to work outside in the sun these days, gotta get up earlier tomorrow.
