I think they are wonderful, I think they symbolize how people with different tastes can get along with each other to the point that even though the homes ( and they are homes, not just houses) are connected, they are owned by two different owners, and that is the point that is made. You have to see there is a lot of love put into these places even though it might be a different style. These are just a few of at least 60 along one street. all doubles and both sides different, although some are close to the other side. If there was a foot between them we would think nothing of it.
Another advantage today, you only have 3 outside walls to heat.

When the folks moved out of the unit above the garages, in the four unit condo I live in, they shut off the gas....no heat...I found out quickly that there was no insulation between their unit and my second floor common walls. My heating bills went orbital!

I can't think of anything I would enjoy more!! Plan to spend some time! As soon as I locate the pictures of the old buildings, I will be happy to post them! We literally have hundreds of floppy discs, totaling thousands of photos! Not all of old buildings, of course!

Believe it or not, it is still occupied. Notice the car parked in front. They actually just replaced the posts holding the upper porch up.
I imagine there are only one or 2 rooms livable at best.
It is a shame that it is in such a bad shape. You can tell by the old black and white that it was quite a place in it's day.

i was in that building that charlie posted. in its day there was a bar there. which finally closed in the late 80's.and believe it or not it was a nice place inside. only thing was you had to go to the third floor to use the bathroom. the wood work inside was phenomenal .

It' such a shame that buildings like that are allowed to deteriorate to that extent....Guess the almighty $$ determines what $hould or $hould not be done....as we've seen so well these last few months.

The old west could provide some very interesting buildings, and combinations of businesses. Most everyone knows about the combination of the barber as a dentist, but many other providers were in multiple lines too. It was possible to sell hardware and be an undertaker.
I'll bet you know a few of the odd combinations that existed. I guess with a small population a lot of folks did double duties.
