A personal anniversary
#1
I was just poking around at what was once our old forum and discovered that today, February 3rd, is the anniversary of my 11th year being associated with the Gauge in one way or the other. 2285_ I also notice than Mikey (ngauger) has me beat by 2 years and 45 days and was one of the original members to register. Thumbsup Thumbsup

Just out of curiosity does anyone else have a recollection of how long they've been on these forums? Remember, we date back to Dec. 2000 as the-gauge, then to Zealot for a while, and now here as Big Blue for over five years now.

Let's hear it from those of you that remember how long ago you registered anywhere along the way, the-gauge, Zealot or Big Blue, and just how you got here. Welcome

I can't remember prezactly, but I was with the-guage for several years before zealot, then eons (it seemed) with zealot before we got back to Big Blue. So, it's been at least a while. 2285_ 2285_

We bought our first home computer in 2002. One of the first things I did online was to look up "model railroading" which led me to the forums associated with TRAINS, Model Railroader magazine, etc. Not long after I started reading that forum I saw a thread with the title "Welcome _____ from The Gauge". As it turned out the thread was a snarky shot at an early member here (I forget what the whole context or conflict was) but it made me curious to see what The Gauge was all about. In a short time I was a member of The Gauge and left the other forums behind.

I started with the old forum probably 2005. But I don't know for sure, I got banned from the old place for necroposting. Nope

I was a member of the old Gauge before it moved to Zealot. Didn't start back into trains until about '03 so sometime after that. I could easily be celebrating a 10 year anniversary here.

You have me beat by a little bit. According to records, you joined the-gauge on Jul 7, 2001, just about a half-year from its opening.

Yeah, I do remember your being there, but from what I see, you are not banned, you have been eliminated. :o There was a time that CG had appointed a mean-spirited admin, and he would ban or delete anyone for the slightest infraction. The problem is that once your username was deleted, it can't be recovered. I was locked out for asking a simple question about a function that wasn't working and I had to go to the head guy at CG to get myself reinstated. 35 After that admin was fired, Mikey and I were able to go back in there and reinstate a lot of those that were banned. This guy had once proposed deleting all threads that hadn't been posted to in the past six months or so, thus deleting all our archives and valuable discussions. Fortunately, he was replaced before he had that chance. The new regime has a posted rule about necroposting, and has banned some of you for just that. I have no idea why, we have nothing against reopening an old thread, just as long as you're not a spammer.... Nope

I joined about a year before the forum was formed, but then I have always been ahead of myself! Icon_lol I think I had been a member for a year or two when I found out I had stage 3 inoperable lung cancer and that was in Dec. of 2002. I don't remember how I founf the place but I'm glad I survived the lung cancer and that the Gauge survived the cancer known as the "Zealot" !!!! 2285_ Thumbsup

I just went to the old place, I joined February 13, 2007. I was searching for information about an online hobby shop that I had problems with and the forum came up. I stayed there until this forum was set up, then I went back and deleted everything I could. I didn't mind a fews ads but it got overwhelming.
When I went back today I was informed I had an "urgent message" which was about some sort of software program that I should download.
I never considered spam an urgent message. One of the many reasons I am not there anymore.

We are also glad that you got through that ordeal, and that the Gauge got through the ordeal of Zealot. 2285_ We have kept the old way of doing things and so we have many old friends back as a result. Things change over the years, and in many aspects of life, they need to change to keep up with the world, but there's no reason why we need to go along with this concept. Civility, friendliness, reasonable rules and a lot of good folks gives us little reason to change. I don't think we can thank you all enough for making and keeping Big Blue what it still is today. Looks like it was April 4, 2005 for me. Almost ten years! thats probably longer than I have stuck with any specific forum regularly. I tend to haunt some of the other forums and post from time to time, but this place is the best.

I just went back over to that other place. According to them, I joined on July 17, 2004. I don't know if that is when they bought the old Gauge or when I actually joined the old Gauge.

Anything before the spring of 2008 was still "the-gauge". CG bought it sometime around then. I can't find any correspondence about CG before August of that year, so I'm guessing it was maybe May or June that they took over. Mikey and I started discussions about reviving the old Gauge sometime around the fall of that same year and as you all know, Big Blue came to life by that December.

Zealot has become a paper modeler's forum, with an occasional post in the railroad forums and a rare post in the R/C forums. They just changed over to new software and now it's impossible to search and list members by anything, including the date that they registered. You can only individually search for someone if you know their username.

I don't think I officially got banned for "necroposting". I got banned to nor responding to a PM in a timely manner from an admin who wanted me to swear and agree to the forum rules. Someone here talked about being banned for replying to an old thread, so I went over, found an old thread, and responded "nice job!" or something like that. Then I got the warning about necroposting, a PM about how I will be banned if I don't respond to the PM in 30 minutes, and 30 minutes later another PM to tell me I have been banned. I was actually quite proud of myself Smile

I had to go back and check, and it seems I joined the old Gauge on September 6th, 2005. I had already joined the MR site earlier (January, 2004), and got an invitation from Andrew (Masonjar) to check out the Gauge. I still get the occasional notification from there when somebody comments on one of my threads. I noticed today that I'm also on their list of "Notable Members". Eek I wonder if that's because I deleted all of my photos from their Gallery before I left? Misngth
