Danke, Harry! Big Grin

Progress has been a little slow on CR at the moment as I've been working on small projects - building structure kits, wiring decoders into locos, repainting stuff, applying decals, etc.

That said, I think Cane River as it stands in it's current form is about as far as the layout is going to go.

It was my first ever layout, and I've made a lot of mistakes on it that I could only learn through doing. I couldn't be happier with the layout, but I shall be retiring it soon, I think.

I've now got a new layout plan in mind for the replacement for it, which will allow for a long mainline run as well as a fair amount of switching. I'll be starting a new thread on that layout soon, and will keep updating Cane River as and when something is done on the layout.

Watch this space, I guess. Smile

For a first attempt you did very well, if you hadn't said that I would never have guessed that was your first try. Cheers

Cheers TR!

Prior to this I started a couple of layouts that were never finished, but nothing got past the tracklaying stage - didn't even get any wires connected!

Before that was about 10 years playing tabletop wargames, so I've had some scenery practice but very little else. Smile

Tonight I thought I'd tidy the layout room a little, and naturally that lead to photos.

This is what Cane River currently looks like, with the stock shelf at the front of the layout slowly being taken over by structure kits. I've got 2 more boxes of them tucked away but they just keep on springing up! Smile

Last night I finally stopped procrastinating and got the paint brushes out.

Order of business for last night was this loco:

[Image: 20140616_191414_6_bestshot-1_zps941f76dc.jpg]

With 3 GP20's in my collection, I wanted something a little different for this one, so with some spares from my bits box and some paints, she now looks... quite different. The story is that the N&CRR went to the Western Pacific some time before their merger with the UP, and snapped up a pair of their aging GP20's to use as road switchers. This is one, with the running numbers and road name painted out, and re-numbered to 935 - the number has a relevance to someone within the shortline's board of directors, I am sure. Either that or the workshop foreman just threw darts at a list of numbers!

The loco was given a coat of black primer, and then was painted up with a coat of games workshop 'orkhide shade' before getting 'macharius solar orange' stripes, and the patch job done with 'knarloc green'.

Looks about right to me. Smile

Over the weekend I spent some time switching the layout and - inspired by Broadoak on RMWeb - I took photos of each stage along the way. Over the next few posts I'll add photos and descriptions of how a switching job on Cane River takes place.

We catch Southern Pacific SD9 #3914 as it rumbles down Monroe Avenue with a short train of freight cars for the industries at Clarence, on the Cane River branch. Here it can be seen running between Frye's scrap yard and the large Samson Distribution warehouse.
[Image: 20141206_144801_8_bestshot-1_zpsd3ad6380.jpg]

Another view, this time from along the tracks as the train slowly approaches the camera, bell chiming and horn blowing. Here the ill maintained trackage so typical of a shortline railroad is painfully apparent:
[Image: 20141206_144822_4_bestshot-1_zpsefd3022a.jpg]

The crew prepare to brake as the locomotive emerges from the trees and enters the run around loop at the end of the branch.
[Image: 20141206_144928_1_bestshot-1_zps0ec2385e.jpg]

The locomotive slowing to a crawl, the brakeman departs the caboose and walks along the train ready to cut the cars.
[Image: 20141206_145143_6_bestshot-1_zps18240370.jpg]

Within minutes, the locomotive has spotted the centerbeam flat on the run around, and the crew prepare to leave their caboose beside the Samson Distribution factory, leaving the loop clear for the car movements to come.
[Image: 20141206_145213_4_bestshot-1_zps046cd805.jpg]

Caboose now secured, the train backs into the team track beside Frye's scrap and spots a loaded box car beside a pair of empty covered hoppers...

...leaving the train free to spot an empty gondola to the scrap yard track ready to be loaded with shredded and crushed metal.

Here are the next load of photos from the switching session:

Once the gondola is dropped off at Frye's scrap yard, the locomotive collects the previous box car and empty covered hoppers, bringing them out of the spurs and onto the run around loop. The hoppers are connected to the caboose and left spotted by Samson Distribution...

...leaving the team track clear to allow the box car to be spotted at the loading dock.
[Image: 20141206_145909_3_bestshot-1_zps5ee20af9.jpg]

The cushioned box car is then spotted alongside the centerbeam flat...

[Image: 20141206_145941_8_bestshot-1_zpse85ebd28.jpg]

...and the caboose and hoppers returned to the team track lead.
[Image: 20141206_150126_4_bestshot-1_zps41561fb8.jpg]

Once done, the cushioned box car and centerbeam are shuffled on the run around loop...

...so they can be switched into the Louisana Pacific spur in the correct order.

Last weekend's modelling time saw the AMB Hinkle Mill kit progressed significantly. I'm now just looking for some india ink locally so I can stain the wood before painting.

Here's how far I've gotten:

Hi Mike,

Yeah, I haven't updated this one is a loooooooong time.

That's cos I've completely scrapped the layout and started building a new one. I'll try and start a new thread as soon as I get the chance. Smile

I've had to focus on my HO scale layout lately though because I've got to get it ready for a show at the beginning of March.
