White Rock freight house interior?
#1
A while back Vigdis bought the White Rock freight house from Monroe Models, but has only recently started building the kit. She wants a detailed interior, but the kit came with no flooring at all, or any suggestions on how the interior should be. The trackside doors are situated a little higher than the ones on the opposite side, indicating two different floor levels inside the building. Does anyone here know how this was done? Was there a small elevated deck just inside the loading doors, with a ramp or stairs down to the main floor level, or was it some other solution? What about shelves or storage racks inside the building, were there any of those or was the building pretty much just a big empty space? Any info here would be great, prototype pics from a similar freight house would be even better Smile .

Thanks,
Svein

I went to their website and couldn't find that model. I thought if I saw the model it might give some clues. If it were me I would look for some photos of similar freight house's or just use my modeler's license. I doubt that there would be very much stuff inside or storage shelves. It is a freight station not a storage building. If it is older than 1940 it probably didn't have large shelves as fork lifts were relatively new machines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forklift_truck#History . For a guess I would say a couple of small stacks of boxes / crates near the doors and a couple of hand trucks And a freight truck http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics. ... 934/page/1 My R.E.A. loading dock [Image: 100_0876.jpg]Hope this helps a little

I know, I couldn't find it either, neither on their home page nor at Walthers where she ordered it from, but after a general search I found this site. It's the exact same kit as Vigdis', and a great how-to on building and weathering the kit, but still no interior pics.

I found this in the description:
The freight house is a very important part of every railroad as it is the point where the railroad can load and unload goods to businesses and individuals. This freight house has box car height doors on the front and street level doors in the back. Some of these structures where also used as coal storage sheds.

My guess would be ramps built into the floor on the inside to drop to the street doors for truck (or wagon) loading, The floors were probably laid with 3x6 tongue and groove lumber, with a substantial frame to support heavy loads.
