Well.....

To start, you can think of the DD40AX as a Prehistoric Gen-Set because it has 2 prime movers.

Like two SD40-2's on one frame.

A pair of EMD 645E3A's

2 x 3,300hp engines for 6,600hp.

Most modern Gen-Sets start with 600hp or 700hp engines and multiply.

600, 1200 and 1800hp

OR

700, 1400 and 2100hp.

Gen-Sets are mostly used for switching jobs.

On a DD frame you could squeeze maybe 7 or 8 Gen-Sets for 4,900hp or 5,600hp

For a Road Engine on the other hand, ECO locomotives have larger single prime movers that are very fuel efficient and low emission.

In this case you can look at putting two SD30C-ECO's on one frame.

Squeeze two EMD 12–710G3A or three EMD 8–710G3A–T2 under the hood for ~6,000hp.

That huge loco as a switcher is somebody's "fig Newton" of their imagination! But why would any real RR ever do this as in they NEVER would. Oh wait this is a real MR so it has nothing to do w/ the real world. Heck why not cut the loco in half & have each side ride on one 4 axle truck. LOL

Agreed, it's a figment.. However it shouldn't stop one from experimenting.
