Hallo Reinhard.

I wondered if you could use the method used by Kurt when he build his Bushwick Terminal layout.
Here are the link to that page http://bigbluetrains.com/forum/viewtopic...&start=105

Cheers!

The pointer to Kurt's posting was very good. He wrote:

Then after spreading the plaster on the layout, I immediately dispersed very fine sand and fine grey ballast on the area and carefully worked it into the plaster by tapping with my fingertips. When the plaster was dry I vaccumed the area to remove all loose ballast."

That sounds great but I have no talent to work with plaster but very fine sand and gravel is the route to go. I am currently using N scale material. Will have a look for Z scale or even finer stuff.

ps. Waiting for tomorrows vacuum session of the last static grass batch

Reinhard, have you had a look at the Asoa Mineralbeton stuff? Unfortunately there is only a picture link to the Jurakalk Mineralbeton in the Ladegut section, no picture link at the Mineralbeton part of the page.

Thomas, I have "Drainagematerial dark #1399" from ASOA. That is fine like dust but to dark. I have just ordered "Drainagematerial #1398" (light). Should be shipped on Tuesday and arrive later this week.
I have two plans to use it:
a.) distribute the light dust with a sieve over fine N scale ballast.
b.) distribute the light dust with a sieve over concrete painted styrene
I will try both and post the results here. Some darker tiny stones might be added too.

* "Drainagematerial" is the finer ballast beside and under the ballast to ensure proper drainage. It is offered fine as dust by the German company named ASOA (http://www.asoa.de/index.htm) in two forms light and dark.

Bulk application of static fiber grass is completed and shrubs are set in groups.

I hope you don't mind, but I've taken the liberty of doing a bit of cutting and colouring of your last post. Brilliant layout, the way the grass ,to me, gives the impression of a line that is short of a bit of TLC in some places. Inspiration to all I think.
It's a good day when you wake up in the morning. It's not your problem if you don't.

I do usually post the photos intentionally "as is" to show the progress of the work inclusive all problems. But I did some very basic improvements with Flickr over the last 10 minzes and got a big surprise. I choose "replace" after editing but the old photo is gone (or may be hidden) and the edited photo has another name. Big Blue shows a blank rectangle and I have to update the pointer into Flickr. I would have loved to do the editing later and BB still finds the photo.

ps. The photo you edited is from this morning without shrubs. It got replaced after lunch time with similar with shrubs. But both are still available in Flickr.

Reinhard,Those bushes or scrub trees* looks good. Thanks for a idea I can "borrow" for scrub trees.

*I'm not sure what they are called but,I've always heard them called scrub tress because they resemble a large bush with small branch like limbs.

The shrubs are Heki #1735. A pack consists of 8 shrubs.

ps. I use the term "shrubs" following the translation for "Busch" of: http://dict.leo.org/ende/index_de.html#/...wSingle=on

pps. and reused a string of fence

I am also enjoying this version.
I am in the process of building my first small switching shelf layout (8ft by 12inch) and will be going for this type of theme.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot for the friendly comments.
I had to make up my mind about the location of the layout and planted 10 small palm trees and run two FCEN CF7 engines.

and some larger palm trees too.

I found a small residual of the fine ASOA ground cover. It is not perfect and Kurt knows why he used it together with plaster, his technique is the far better one, but it is fine enough to match the tires of a small truck and the color matches the layout. I will go with it.

There is a nice discussion about gravel roads in the MRH http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/15498.

Coming along nicely Reinhard. Looks like you have a lot of team track space. I'm just throwing this out there, bush terminal had safety kleen as a customer who would truck in waste oil and pump it through a home made standpipe structure into tank cars. You'd have some variety of traffic instead of only loaded fright cars in and trucked out. It was pretty simple to make also, I used scrap parts from a modern fire escape kit and plastruct parts.

You hit a soft spot 357 That long track in the front was mentally shortened a long time ago. This is the right time to do it!
The little facility is really nice but the reckless operating 0-5-0 would kill it within minutes in the very foreground Sad

and everything got covered by Grassmaster early next morning. The vac will show the truth tomorrow Wink The remaining team track is about 20" long.
