  Loader Kit Bashing

Hello Everyone,
I initially posted this thread in the wrong place sorry if I offended someone.

I model the late 50's and I needed a loader for my "Wilson Lumber" scene.
Since I couldn't find one, I kit bashed a model that I bought at a local hobby shop.

Items for Sale With Our New Logo are Now in The Big Blue Trains Zazzle Store
Posted by: ngauger - 02-18-2019, 12:05 PM - Forum: Forum Announcements - No Replies

As Don (ezdays) and I have said many times, We are doing our best to keep Big Blue Trains ad free.

Remember, Big Blue is solely owned by Don and myself, and we have been true to our word. No ads of any kind, no click through links (bitly), no sponsors either or mixing in with other hobbies. We are supported by our members' generous donations and sales of cups, shirts and other custom products through our online shop.

We have also held an occasional auction of custom decorated cars and other unique items, and, it's been a few years, but we've had a few fund drives as well. We do what we can, but try to give something back in return.

Please visit the Big Blue Zazzle Store, we have placed many items for sale with different versions of the new logo on them.

If you think of something you don't see here, let me know and I will try to find it to add to the store.

We also are aware that some of the items are costly, but there are some easily affordable items listed too.
Any funds that are are made from sales are exclusively used to keep Big Blue going.

Thanks - From Don and I

I have been scanning negatives and photos for the East Liverpool (Ohio) Historical Society and I have been given permission to share the railroad related ones with Big Blue. Some of the negatives are 8x10 so there are a lot of things in tha back ground that can be enlarged. I will post some of these pictures here from  time to time and I may even post some hoping for more information than I can provide.
I will start with the only color slide in the collection so far. As close as I can guess, mid 50's taken on the west side of East Liverpool  under the Ohio River Bridge to Newell, WV.      Charlie

Some times ago, I bought two undecorated Proto 2000 50’ Automobile boxcar kits in a train show at 5$ per kit.  After documenting the project, I couldn’t be sure that CNR, my favorite road, ever had this type of car with a door at the A end. I put those kits aside and decided to use them for parts.  The excellent Proto trucks and metal wheels are actually being worth more than the price of the kit. Furthermore, the previous owner had started the assembly of one of the kits and some parts were broken or missing.

Two weeks ago, while visiting a local hobby shop, I found two Proto 2000 50’ Automobile boxcar kits decorated for the CNR with the correct A end for the prototype at 12,95$ per kit.  Although I like to paint and letter my cars myself, I decided to buy them and have some easy modeling.  Proto 2000 kits are generally nice kits with small and delicate parts that makes nice cars.

In no time I had both ready to be put on the layout.

I then thought that I should have a look back at those undecorated kits with the end door. I also did more search on the Internet and found that GTW had such cars and a look at an old photo convinced me that the kit is right with the prototype.

I decided to build the kits and replaced the broken and missing parts on the underframe the same way I did on more challenging kits in the last few months.

Those cars have deep side sills and those parts will be barely visible when the car will be on the tracks but I know they are there.

Here is a photo of the cars waiting for the paint shop. Note that on the closer car, I had to make the tackboards as I had used the one that came with the kit for another project.

Easy modeling but fast and good results.  A few hours of pleasure too.

  Computer search program

Many of you have noticed my posts and pictures. I have many pictures stored on my computer and they are included on 3 active external hard drives as well as the 1TB drive in the computer. I keep at least 3 backups in full resolution. I have scanned glass plate negatives that I have done for the East Liverpool Historical society and a couple other history collectors. My fee for scanning these old plates is keeping an original for my personal collection, and of course, the right to share any railroad related images.
Locating pictures was easy with the xp search, but later versions of windows have not exactly been friendly to search.
I had bought a program that worked great but when I updated my computer I could not install it without paying another 65 dollar fee for the program.
Everyone that knows me knows my first name is Cheap so I searched for another free program and came up with Agent Ransack. The name sounds scary but I read about it, downloaded it and I am very impressed with this little program.
I can search 7 TB of connected hard drives in less than 5 minutes for the most part and the results are placed in order with the same name files across all drives listed together Here is a screen shot of the results
I still have a lot to learn, but this really fills the bill, you just have to name your files so you can search them easily. It will find any string of characters that you want in a file name
