Brooklyn 1st Ave waterfront
Posted by: Rscott417 - 11-26-2017, 10:19 AM - Forum: Layouts - Replies (164)

I realized my northern branch plan was all over the place and couldn't realistically fit all the industries and aspects of the branch that I would have liked to include without peninsulas jetting out everywhere. So, I'm going back to the drawing board and back to one of my first posts on this forum almost 6 years ago viewtopic.php?f=17&t=5883 . I'm just annoyed that I sold off all my cross harbor engines Nope

I think I've come up with a track plan that will depict bush terminal even after moving around some key features of the area. Although the duck under corner of the loft building is on 41st & 2nd it'll be on 1st and the car float bridge will be on the north end of the yard not the south. I'll probably come up with a freelance railroad with my own paint scheme and logos but that's still up for debate. It takes up much less space and I think this will be more fun to build and operate.
Here's what I drew up:

 GERN central info
Posted by: restorator - 11-25-2017, 08:08 PM - Forum: Industries Along The Rails - Replies (8)

calling doctorwayne...

I have been enjoying the posts on here and elsewhere about GERN flux. That said I cannot find anywhere anyone has put together a central repository, website, or not even a facebook page for GERN. Does any of that exist? All I find are varied forum posts and they're often hard to follow. It would certainly be handy to have a specific place for others to find the details and learn about GERN and start their own franchise in a easy to read manner. This could go a long way to keeping Mr Gibson happy and may even create many more GERN affiliates.

Has doctorwayne ever considered immortalizing the GERN registry and company advertisements in another format or am I just not finding such? What I suggesting is simply a webpage, or even a sticky forum topic (searchable by Google, etc) that could even be on this website or elsewhere, describing exactly what GERN is and why and how to become part of it. You could also have the current rolling stock registry listed. It would also make a nice place for images to be easily found. And of course it would lead back to this forum for relevant discussion.

It is possible I just haven't found such a place yet, but that is exactly why I am suggesting such a thing. If I can't find it others can't. I only heard of such a thing by bumping into it reading another forum but then I found little bits and pieces strewn all over before I collected enough information to get the big picture of how many people and how far GERN has spread.

 Life-Like/Varney Kitbashed GARX Meat Reefer
Posted by: sailormatlac - 11-22-2017, 07:45 PM - Forum: HO Modeling - Replies (10)

I recntly decided to take two Life-Like and Varney wood reefers that were in bad shape and to upgrade them drastically into 37ft GARX meat reefer. Yes, I had to scrap almost everything except the walls and everything else was rebuild from scratch. However, I really enjoyed the process. Brake gear was redone correctly, ice hatches made out of styrene and paper and several other details including a lot of hand punched rivets.

I certainly could have been less crazy about it, but I'm lately taking a lot of interest in doing freight car projects as correctly as I can. I have plenty of time to do so and find it extremely relaxing and rewarding. Once again the trick is to split the job into sub assemblies that can be done in one evening.

 Bergen East & Hudson Railroad
Posted by: Rscott417 - 11-17-2017, 02:31 PM - Forum: HO Modeling - Replies (2)

I decided I'm going to model some freelance motive power. The railroad is Bergen East & Hudson located in Hudson and Bergen County in NJ. They'll operate on my Northern Branch layout (whenever I can start building it). The idea behind it is to get some variety on the layout. The story behind them is they have a contract with CSX to switch the smaller freight branch lines that CSX neglects in Hudson county and eastern Bergen county but do not operate on NJ Transit tracks. To get started, I'm going to use 2 Athearn Genesis Delaware & Hudson GP38-2s and pretend that CP Rail didn't get all of them and I really like the blue and grey paint scheme. I'd eventually like to add 1 or 2 MoW vehicles to the fleet, maybe a smaller switcher of some kind like an sw1500 and a shoving platform. One of the ex-D&H engines will have my daughters name and her birthday as the road number. Here's an idea what they'll look like.

 Illinois Central Paducah Sand Domes

Per request, I drew up an Illinois Central "Paducah" sand dome that can be 3-D printed on Shapeways:

I'm a little surprised that such an item is not manufactured by the major detail parts suppliers as there seem to be many IC modelers out there. This was fun to draw up, and I hope it helps out those wanting to model IC steam.

 Veteran's Day 2017
Posted by: ngauger - 11-11-2017, 06:00 AM - Forum: Hobo's Camp - Replies (2)

On this day, at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiegne, France. ~ Wikipedia

Veterans Day (renamed in 1954) is not to be confused with Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service.[1] It is also not to be confused with Armed Forces Day, a minor U.S. remembrance that also occurs in May, which specifically honors those currently serving in the U.S. military. ~ Wikipedia

With that said:

Big Blue thanks all service personnel for their dedication in joining the Armed Forces and their aid in the fight for freedom in all those "wars to end all wars"
