My first shapeways creation!
Posted by: nachoman - 09-08-2017, 08:46 AM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (15)

I've always wanted to try this - and finally got around to doing it. Most of my interest is in narrow gauge and pre-1920, and that means tons of kitbashing and scratchbuilding. And that means I need detail parts - some are available already, some not, some are just not exactly what I need.

So - here's my first creation!!! Waveof7

http://shpws.me/OVTj

I've been converting many standard gauge flea market cars into narrow gauge. I know Tichy and Grandt line make fine K style airbrake kits, but right now I just don't have patience for adding all the brake rods and levers to an underframe that is barely seen. I just want the most visible part - the brake clylinder. So, I created some on shapeways that can just be printed off and cut apart and glued on!

I've got a few more ideas I am working on next. First up will be a coupler box that will allow the easier use of Kadee 158 "scale" head whisker couplers in HOn3. The boxes they come with are too big and interfere with the movement of the narrow gauge trucks unless they are cut down and modified. But if I can make boxes that will work as is, then I can order the 158s in bulk!

Anyway - this really wasn't that hard!

 WEEKLY PHOTO FUN - SEPT. 8TH-14TH, 2017

The TH&B had a train ready to head to the Erie Northshore's interchange near Port Maitland, but didn't have enough power available to get it there. Luckily, someone at TH&B's Chatham St. roundhouse knew someone at CNR's Stuart St. facility, where a loco, fresh out of the shops, was about to be sent out, light, to its home Division. After a little pulling of the right strings, the CNR loco showed up at Kinnear Yard, and the train was soon on its way.
A Northshore Mikado was waiting at the interchange when the train arrived, and when the TH&B loco cut off to head back to Hamilton with another train, simply coupled on, ahead of the interloper, and the train headed for Port Maitland.

Evidently, a railfan got word of the event, and was there to record the move through Port Maitland. Up front was Northshore's 632, a pretty-much stock copy of a USRA Light Mike...

...while CNR's 3239, another Mikado, was a member of their S-1-a class...

[Image: INTERCHANGE%20FREIGHT%20OFF%20THE%20THB......%20002.jpg]

Both locos would take water at Lowbanks, and again at South Cayuga, and after turning on the wye at Airline Junction, would head for Mount Forest, Grand Valley's northern terminus. After being serviced there, the 3239 headed over to the CNR interchange, and then back to its home on the Leetown Division.

 Eastern Roads, Rhearn Still Around?
Posted by: Amalynn - 09-02-2017, 07:55 PM - Forum: Lower Berth - No Replies

Anybody happen to know what became of Mike Scotto, who went by the moniker Eastern Roads over on the old TWP forums. Is he around these parts? If not, does anybody know how to get in touch with him? What about Reg Hearn? Went by the name Rhearn?

Model Railroader 2010 Beer Line Layout?
Posted by: Amalynn - 09-02-2017, 07:47 PM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (2)

Would anybody happen to have a copy of the 2010 Model Railroader beer line layout articles that they could scan in and share with the class? I am wanting to use their project as a basis for my own layout, but don't have copies of the issues and think it crazy to buy back issues for one article from each issue.

 MLW RS-10 and RS-18, what's the difference?
Posted by: cnrglen - 09-01-2017, 07:13 PM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (7)

I recently was given a Proto1000/Canada Hobbycraft RS-10 in CP rail. I'm wondering about the outside differences of a RS-10 and RS-18. Also I believe it has dynamic brakes, what does a non-dynamic brake RS unit look like?

Another Reinhard type photo, when Conrail still did the switching at Dock Street. A Conrail SW1200 picks up two box cars at Pier 7.

 F&C kits paint removal question
Posted by: twilight - 09-01-2017, 07:25 AM - Forum: Tips and Tricks - Replies (5)

I have some old F&C milk car reefers that I am trying to remove the Pullman green paint from to repaint. The kits are the older blue box kits, resin is kind of an orangey tan. One kit I have been letting sit in Scalecoat Washaway for about 12 hours, the other has been soaking in brake fluid for roughly the same amount of time. There has been next to no paint removal. I have to stop at Walmart tonight and I'm going look for some liquid Easy Off, Simple Green, & the Purple Stuff. So I'm looking for any other thoughts or suggestions or possibly what kind of paint this could have been.

thx,
Mark
