  Freelance 2017-2
Posted by: faraway - 06-04-2017, 03:17 AM - Forum: Layouts - Replies (88)

The current part of the layout with scenery consists of a main part in the foreground and a long feeder track in the background connecting four industries. It is connected to the main part by curve close to the window. This rear part looks nice but I hesitate to switch it due to the inconvenience to reach it.
An other topic is my interest in urban areas other than industries.
And the third topic is a possible upcoming reworks of the room with a new layout from scratch.

I intend to handle all three aspects with Freelance 2017-2 by covering the rear part of the layout and build a new city scenery elevated by 1/2".
I loose four industries I do not like to serve due to it's inconvenient location, get space for a new urban scenery on a level base and the modification is reasonable in cost and effort if it is all torn down new year.
I have not made up my mind how to handle the three industries served by the foreground tracks (new, old or modified).

Do you still have a land line?
Posted by: FiatFan - 06-03-2017, 08:26 PM - Forum: Lower Berth - Replies (24)

Just found this article on CBS News.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.cbsnews.com/news/could-this-be-the-end-of-the-line-for-the-old-fashioned-telephone-calls/">http://www.cbsnews.com/news/could-this- ... one-calls/</a><!-- m -->

I still have a land line for both phone calls and my internet service (not AT&T). The only other internet provider in town is the local cable company and I avoid giving them any money I don't have to. Not real pleased with the phone company either but they are the lesser of two evils, in my opinion.

I am trying to host a special event for all my friends here at the Gauge. One Saturday time next month (July), we will have to pick a date that works best for us. I would like to invite all the members that can make it up to Steamtown in Scranton PA, to take part in one of our restoration sessions. There are no special skills needed, or tools required, just pack a lunch. Keep in mind that you will have to be able to climb in and out of the engine and possibly knell for short periods of time. If it's a problem or you have some kind of disability I am sure that we can find something that you will be able to do ( I spent a few weeks working on the B with a broken foot last year). We appreciate all the help we get no matter what form it comes in.

Respond here if you're interested and we will set up a day to do this.

  Pullman green paint
Posted by: twilight - 05-22-2017, 11:48 AM - Forum: Engineer's Technical Workshop - No Replies

I have a few Pfaudler milk cars I'm gather information for an upcoming project. I am looking for a good source for the Pullman green paint. I was leaning toward Scalecoat ll paint, but the sample image seems really dark almost Brunswick Green looking. Now it seems brass Pfaulder cars may have been painted with this dark green, though. Further poking around the web lead me to the Microscale Floquil conversion chart which showed Humbrol 86 matte light olive as a match. More of the green color I had in mind, but I have never used their paint before. I also found a source for Floquil Pullman green but leary of purchasing because of not knowing how old it is. Checked out Trucolors too and think that is to dark also and I haven't had much success with their paints when I've used them. Does anyone use the Humbrol paints? Or any other suggestions?

  Wood Cabooses
Posted by: Mike Kieran - 05-22-2017, 11:35 AM - Forum: Strictly Rail Operations - Replies (2)

I was asked by someone when the last wood cabooses were used in North America and my guess was the late 1960s or early 1970s. I really had no answer and now I’m curious. When were the last ones in service?

O scale mixed media kitbash/scratchbuild project
Posted by: danielb - 05-19-2017, 07:49 PM - Forum: Scratchbuilding and kitbashing - All Scales - Replies (4)

I'm planning a structure build for Piedmont Blues, and am starting with a small Clevermodels kit - in this case the Brick Garage with Loft - and changing it into something totally different.

The idea is to use Clevermodels textures for the brickwork, and the roof, which will be sheet metal. The rest will be made from card and wood.

At least, that's the plan!

I'm not sure what industry this could be, though it wont be a rail served structure. The layout is set in 1965 - any suggestions on what it could be would be most appreciated. Smile

The idea is that the original garage structure has been built on top of, the roof removed and a new, flat work area with an enclosed staircase up to both it, and the timber and clapboard tower structure.

I intend to build the structure in the way it would have actually have been built in "reality".

So, the garage structure will take centre stage at the beginning of the build. On top of that, I'll add timber cross beams, and build upwards from there.

I'll post progress photos as and how it goes. Smile
