Model Railroads of Southern California’s fortieth layout tour takes place on Thursday through Sunday, October 10 through 13.

This will be a free self-guided tour of twenty-two layouts and one historic toy train display at fifteen locations throughout San Luis Obispo and northern Santa Barbara Counties, CA. This tour is part of the Central Coast Railroad Festival (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://ccrrf.com/">http://ccrrf.com/</a><!-- m -->). Be sure to visit the CCRRF website for additional railroad events the same days as the layout tours.

Four home layouts, three club layouts and one display are appearing for the first time on our tour program: George Gibson’s DK & Pacific Mountain Railway (HO & HOn3), Ed Morse’s garden railroad, Robin White’s R & P Railroad (N), the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum’s outdoor garden railroad, the Santa Maria Valley Railway Historical Museum’s Lionel and HO layouts, and Ken Lau’s 1935 to 1955 Marx toy train display.

Altogether there will be eight HO layouts, two HOn3 layouts, four N scale layouts, two O scale layouts, one On30 layout, four garden railroads and one Fn3 layout.

If you cannot make this tour more tours are scheduled including a small layout tour the following week as part of the Banning Train Festival on October 19 & 20, and a tour in conjunction with the NMRA/PCR Convention on April 30 to May 4, 2014.

Another tour may be schedule for next February in conjunction with an event I am planning for the Anaheim Packing House to celebrate the railroads and the citrus industry.

A few years back someone told about a free program that basically cropped, changed color filters, contrast. There were no overlays or real fancy editing tools just basics. I loved it and lost it in a crash. Hopefully someone who reads this will remember it and reply with info. I remember nothing about the name.

JohnB sent me Burlington Northern CB&Q 8299 box car. Its destination is Railway Express Agency,R.E.A. Located at Clifton forge on my layout. The first appearance on my layout passing WH cabin, this is as it comes out of a hidden yard. It is the first car in the FFV (fast flying Virginian ) passenger train.



Here it is passing behind a farm house probably shaking the dishes in the cabinet. It is running full steam at this point as it is at the base of a 2% grade.



Now the Berkshire 2760 is earning her keep. Pulling heavy weight coaches up through the mountains.



Now it is crossing Mud river.



Continuing along going through Barboursville. You can see the destination in the back ground.



Even the local law makes an appearance.



Still moving along.



You can see the coal cars at the Guyanne Power company and some old buildings behind it as it continues on its trip.

Just joined and wanted to post a couple pictures of my layout and introduce myself. My name is Don Dunn been modeling for about 26 years. Been working for CSX for 12 years. I have a 16' x16' double deck layout. lower deck has a yard, coal tipple, a farm, and wye train going into a fiddle yard. Upper deck is a steel mill.

I've been browsing this site (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.railarchive.net/randomsteam/dmir1311.htm">http://www.railarchive.net/randomsteam/dmir1311.htm</a><!-- m -->) looking to get some ideas for upgrading my steam roster, and I see that cylinder dimensions are given as "27"x 32", or some such numbers. What do these numbers refer to..??

I built the framework and began building my layout in 1996. I started with a 30" deep shelf.



I then put 4" risers on the frame to put the track on.



When I did the wiring I just laid it on top of the frame work,then built scenery over it. This work great for the first 11 years. Then I had a massive stroke in 07. I could no longer reach my wiring. I needed to find an easier way to work on it.

I got some 11/2" PVC pipe. I then split it from end to end and hung it under my layout hatched to the back of the legs. This made a tray to lay my wiring in. I purchased a 25' trailer wire pack attached to power supply block controls. and laid it in the PVC. It is 4 color coded wires, great for my double main line. I don't have photos of the pipe & wire yet but will get it probably tomorrow. Oh yeah the reason I did this is I was developing some power issues and couldn't work on it with it up under the scenery the way it was so I guess it was time to rewire it. This is a lot of work for me and difficult but I had to do something.
I felt I should let everyone know about this so they could could think about it just in case. Especially if they are just starting a layout

I was out railfanning Zenith yard this morning, and it looks like a freight came in overnight and left JM 34765:

My source in the yard office told me it had come in on an empty car waybill. There's always an imbalance of loads into New Jersey, although the JM itself would probably keep its own empty, since they wouldn't have to pay per diem on it. I guess maybe the PRR or Jersey Central shipped it back to get rid of the per diem payment on the empty car, but it's wound up on the LF&NW, which will have to find a load for it!

It looks like somebody had an order for an empty boxcar, though, because the first shift switcher was switching it out a little later:
