  Freelance 2013-2 (MAW)
Posted by: faraway - 07-07-2013, 07:02 AM - Forum: Layouts - Replies (319)

I intend to to migrate my existing layout from SoCal to the country side of Ohio to utilize my newly built Maumee & Western (plus WAER 344) engines. As usually I do not plan to change the track plan or do a complete rebuild. Smaller portions will be removed and replaced with new scenery. I will use the MAW as a point of inspiration but do not intend to build a model of it. I could collect a hole bunch of fine photos also showing the area on both sides of the tracks. The very limited availability of Google Streetview in that area is a real problem for me. I will have to do a lot of freelance and fit commercial kits as they fit into my understanding of that area.
I see grain elevators in all (small) towns from Woodburn to Liberty Center, John Manville Fiber in Defiance, Cold Storage in Napoleon and La Farge in Cecile. I will mix and match that until my available space is used up.
The very long background building in the center will be the starting point. It will be replaced with elevators, silos, storage bins etc. An order of the usual standard Cornerstone kits has been released an hour ago.
I expect to start with this first step end of the week. You will be kept inform about success and failure of that migration Wink

For now four homeless engines in the staging yard are all I have

  gn 15 layout : sebastien's mussels
Posted by: franckcombe - 07-07-2013, 06:12 AM - Forum: Layouts - Replies (32)

In parallel of the Woolacombe bay (at 1/13 scale), I'm doing with 2 friends of my club a gn15 layout. I convert 2 members of my club to gn15 (Gn15 is 15" gauge rail at 1/24 scale on 16.5 mm rail).

This is the true site in narrow gauge located in the south of France.

The name is "Moules de chez Sébastien " or sebastien's mussels for the MOMING 2013 challenge in sedan (France).

We share the job : Erwan and Jean-paul build the layout and me I work on the rolling stocks and the weathering.

Erwan find the idea of mussel business in the French Mediterranean sea in the "pond of Thau", in reality it's a big salt lake.

This is our interpretation.

We have made some progress. We need to install now the backdrop and made the sea with resin.

  MMA Train explodes at Lac-Mégantic
Posted by: sailormatlac - 07-06-2013, 07:22 AM - Forum: Canada Rails - Replies (25)

Not the funny kind of news to be awaken to in the morning.

A tragic derailment occured on Montreal Maine Atlantic early in this morning. In fact many tank cars exploded, destroying an important part of the historic downtown (including the local newspaper and the public library). Actually, over 30 buildings were destroyed and the fire is far to be controlled because of the heat. 73 oil tank cars were part of the train.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/s...-fire.html

In fact, a month ago I was railfanning this very spot, standing at the crossing nearby the church and chatting about how it was a nice spot for trains and how that oil was bringing new life to this almost vegetative railway. How ironic.

I'm a little concerned how this accident will have repercussion in the future.

At least, no casualies for the moment. Pray it stay like this.

Matt

  Weathering old black engine
Posted by: faraway - 07-04-2013, 01:41 AM - Forum: Weathering - Replies (10)

I am working on model of the extreme run down GP10 of the Maumee & Western. This is what I got so far

The prototype looks this way
http://www.railpictures.net/images/d1/0/...575139.jpg
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/pictures/88797/maw.jpg

I see two kind of weathering in parallel
a. The black paint is faded and somehow simply gone at some spots. Those spots are irregular and form a very special pattern over the body. I saw similar pattern on the roof of very old automobiles when the paint was almost gone.
b. Brown rust becomes visible at spots where the black paint is gone.

Do you have a suggestion how to get close to the prototype?

  KJR SW in LV paint
Posted by: Charlie B - 07-03-2013, 02:10 PM - Forum: Shutterbug area - Replies (5)

The KJR has taken delivery of an ex CR /LV heritage locomotive. The unit was last used by Rosebud Mining at the Lady Jane mine, Penfield, Pa.
The locomotive was sent to the BP shops in Brookfield and given a complete going over including installing outboard hand rails instead of the hood mounted grabs it was equipped with. The paint was done by BP. The railfans have all ready been nitpicking the mistakes.
Pictures are by Todd H. He asked me to post them for him.

  Trains in the Lone Ranger
Posted by: RobertInOntario - 07-03-2013, 07:56 AM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (13)

I always like seeing movies with train scenes in them, especially if the movie revolves around them! Last night, my sons & I saw the Lone Ranger, which is such a movie.

There are several steam train scenes and I was trying to work out which were actual steam locos and what was computer animation. I think there was a lot of the latter, especially during some of the chase scenes near the end and also (near the beginning) when a steam engine went flying across the desert with its driving wheels turning!

We also frequently saw Jupiter and Constitution. I googled Jupiter and learned that a replica of the original was made in 1979, so perhaps that one is used in several scenes -- but is the Constitution a current, functioning engine as well? My son also said that he read that a steam engine was travelling across the US promoting this movie! I'll also do some more googling as well.

The close-up scenes, where the characters were running or riding alongside the engines, etc., sure looked & sounded real, although I realize that a lot can be done with animation these days.

Thanks, Rob
