Some of you may find this of interest - a new study estimates $50 billion to update aging rail equipment and infrastructure, and another $6 billion per year to maintain it.

A report by the Federal Transit Administration estimates it will cost $50 billion to bring the rail systems in Chicago, Boston, New York, New Jersey, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., into good repair and $5.9 billion a year to maintain them.

On my there is an industry that makes pallets.There is a rail connection for wood chip collection. I had originally wanted lumber unloaded here until I realized that it might be a problem. A fork truck can only access the flat car from side and there is no room for any kind of crane. That left me with maybe a couple of possibilities-
1.Unload the lumber in the freight handling area and have trucked over or
2.Install some sort of inclines that the lumber can be off loaded onto(by hand) and then picked up by fork truck.
As far as I'm concerned both would work but I am leaning towards #2 so that the track could be used for more than one type of car(wood chip).

My favorite is either the DSP&P or the NKP.

I like the DSP&P for its cogdon stacked steam locomotives, majestic mountain scenery, interesting track arrangements, and pitting little locomotives against massive challenges (steep grades, massive mountains, deep snow). Triple and quadruple headers were normal for 10-15 car freight trains.

I like the NKP first and foremost from growing up around the 765. Therefore, NKP steam is how steam is supposed to look. Accordingly, I appreciate AMC C&O equipment since it is similar as well as pre-super power NYC equipment since the White Elephant NKP's pre-super power equipment was closely related to (or based off of) NYC equipment. I don't think the modern NKP had a single locomotive that didn't look quite nice. The road's impeccable freight service and having grown up listening to old NKP employees have definitely clouded my judgement!

I model the DSP&P. I occasionally work on NKP projects and aspire to begin NKP modules once my On3 layout has rudimentary scenery in place.

The NKP is definitely not the most interesting railroad to me...it was far too well run and too flat to be so. The South Park or Silverton Railroad would probably be the most interesting to me.

When I was ballasting my track I tried to be extra careful around the turnouts but a couple of them are a little stiff.Is there anything that I can do to free them up? Suggestions welcome-Bob

Hi guys,

Does anyone have any extras from there Walthers Modular Wall Columns and Caps kit? I would be willing to pay for them if you would like, but im after a few pieces that just seem to be the ones i used the most, and, well now i dont have hardly any of them left for other buildings i need to build with the 18 remaining kits i still have lol.

Im after the:
1. Corner Pilaster Pieces
and
2. Large Flat Cornice Pieces

I seem to have blown right through all of them that i had gotten in the 4 kits i got of these lol, and ive only built 3 buildings Like i said, i still have 18 more kits, that's probably another 3-5 buildings, and i dont have nearly enough of these pieces that i listed above to do them. And, just my luck there out of stock at Walthers! So if anyone can help me out here and sell or give me there extra parts from this kit if you got them, that would be great. Or if someone has seen these on sale online, please let me know where!!

The other night, I was half awake flipping through the TV channels when I came across "The Mask of Zorro". The movie was nearly over, but I did get to see the great train scenes at the end of the movie -- awesome!

I haven't had a chance to google this yet so I was wondering if anyone new which steam trains (i.e. which railroad, etc.) was featured in the film? My sons and I really like action, adventure movies so I'm thinking of renting this for us. Too bad about the train wreck at the end though.
