Photo Central Vermont GP9
Posted by: sailormatlac - 08-25-2019, 05:23 PM - Forum: HO Modeling - Replies (1)

I recently visited Maine and Vermont this summer. Doing some research about railways there, I stumbled upon a nice picture of a CV GP9 still sporting the old CNR green & gold paint scheme from the 1950s as late as 1978. It gave me the idea to model one based on this photo from cnrphotos.com:

Since I didn't want to spend too much money on the project, I purchased a Bachmann GP9. I've used this model for kitbashing a few years ago and liked its sturdiness. Not the best model on the market, but definitely an honest foundation.

I had to make several modification to the shell since Bachmann GP9 is a Phase II model while CV GP9 #4450 was of a later design with a smaller fuel tank and different skirting. Some louvers had to be removed. New ones by Archer will be added prior to painting. I also had on hands a few Cannon & Company EMD 36" fans from a previous bash. I thought it would look better than keeping the quite shallow cast on details. I also added new horns, bell, winter hatch, sinclair antenna, sunshade, lift rings, air and mu hoses and grabirons. Didn't cost a lot because I had all these details in my part box.

I know I could have used an Athearn Genesis, a Proto 2000 or even an Atlas locomotive, but since these locomotives aren't cheap and most would need to remove a lot of factory details, I felt it would be more fun to improve a less than perfect model. Maybe I'm crazy, but I kind of like to work with cheaper model. Doing something nice with my own hands is more satisfying than just buying stuff.

And now, some pictures...

New Heat Source for G Scale Railroad
Posted by: ngauger - 08-21-2019, 06:22 PM - Forum: O/G and Larger Model Railroads - Replies (5)

So, I got the idea from a magazine about scale propane tanks.   Our main office was using a fireplace as the only heat source.
Now, this winter we'll have a propane heater too Smile Smile

And then 2 views of the new tank.

Single Crossovers built with Peco larges
Posted by: railandsail - 08-17-2019, 05:40 PM - Forum: Layouts - Replies (4)

I was rummaging thru my stowage trailer today and found a whole new bunch of Peco large radius turnouts. So now I have more than I need. I went back and started looking at areas where I might insert the large radius Pecos for the mediums,....found a few.

Got to thinking about substituting two large radius Pecos for the single crossover Shinoharas? Looks pretty good visually, and would save me from replacing any metal throw bars on those older Shinoharas. Has anyone had personal experience with such a crossover using the large radius Pecos?? undefined undefined undefined

I realize the diverging tracks on these Pecos and the Shinoharas are different, but in this larger radius configuration it does not look to be a problem?

Just tried to "Mark All Forums Read" and received

So how do I use it correctly? Did I forget to salute first? Icon_e_smile

  Craft shops & MRR
Posted by: RobertInOntario - 08-10-2019, 03:37 PM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (14)

Just curious if any members here use craft stores for their MRR projects. Here in Toronto, we have Michael's and DeSerre's. While these stores are often frequented by people involved in other hobbies — scrapbooking, painting, etc. — I’ve found them very useful for my MRR projects. They even sell scenery items such as ground scatter, trees, etc., and various glues.

Most recently, I’ve been working on a small switching layout (approx. 1’ wide by 6.5’ long) and have added a fiddle yard to it, which is part of the 6.5’ length. I found these two stores to be great in supplying small pieces of foam and card to extend this layout, not to mention cutting surfaces and tools that I could use.

I’m partly curious b/c I recently saw a satirical website that was making fun of how these stores are geared to women, while the men who go there are bored. Sure, I have no interest in parts of their items, but it’s a goldmine of useful items in other areas.

I prefer DeSerre’s here in Toronto. Good selection and prices seem to be better. Are there others in Canada I should consider?
