Purchasing and then teaching myself the in's and' out's of how to use a airbrush was one of the most satisfying things I've yet to do in this hobby. the old saying Rome wasn't built in day certainly rings true.
But once learned you wonder what all the mystic was about lol.

I consider those who do kit bashing and painting as people who have good taste in model railroading.

I'd like to ask a few questions, so that I could learn from your experience:

1) Did you use an airbrush, brush, or spray paint?
2) Is the paint scheme you used in your F7A shell "custom"?
3) How did you strip the original paint?
4) What is your preferred paint (acrylic, lacquer, etc.)?

First of all, I use spray cans. Which goes back to my apartment living days. Mostly Krylon Fusion. There isn't much in railroad colors, but when you're doing your own paint schemes, it doesen't reallly matter. Plus, the white and yellow seem to go on nice, and aren't as transparent as other brands. This might all change though, as my brother-in-law, just sold his house and gave me a compressor.

2: I saw the scheme on another loco once, can't remember where. I liked it so thought I'd try it on the F7A.
3: Brake fluid, with a good washing with soap and water.
4: Enamal. Easy to work with, cleans up easy. Takes decals fine.
