Hi everyone,

This is going to be the build thread for my 10"x72" HO-scale Lebanon Industrial Railway (LIRY).

The LIRY is a very small short-line located in Lebanon, Oregon. The railroad was once a spur owned by the Southern Pacific, that served a local feed mill and trans-load track. In the late 80's, SP decided to abandon the spur, however the traffic to the feed-mill and the trans-load track were so important to the community that the city decided to purchase the track, as well as one of SP's NW-2 for a switcher.

Here is the track-plan:


I have the baseboard completed, and track is ready to be laid. My goal is to have track and wiring done by the end of December, if I am lucky I may also have some basic scenery done by that time.

At the new location in Lewiston, I have a shed in my yard that will serve as storage shed, work shop and a place to house a layout. Although I probably could pack a lot of switching in the area my plan will be to use this a test bed for Free-mo modules. Since the space will be a multipurpose space I have to make compromises to best utilize the small area.

The lower level will have a small work bench and a station for my airbrush. I do not plan on using it as my primary work area, but I figure it is always nice to have a place to finish projects. It also seems that you never have enough flat surfaces when it comes to model railroading.

The second level will be the layout. I would not consider it a traditional layout as its main purpose will be to test out Free-mo modules. The majority of the layout will be a shelf style layout that will be anchored to the wall. Along the back wall a 10' section will be left open to allow for modules to be placed in the layout and tested.




There will be a lift out section in front of the door also the two windows in the front of the building will most likely be covered over on the inside.

The scenery will be modest and based around the area near Bend Oregon. I do plan on painting backdrops based on photos of the area around Bend to set the scene. I may fill in the larger corner areas with a few permanent structures, but we will see.

The top level will be for storage and I plan for it to be suspended from the ceiling in order to keep as much space between the layout and the upper shelving. This should allow for more work space and ease of access to the layout.

What's the skinny on the how the term is used here?

Just wondering what forum members think about the Freelance side of the hobby in particular stripping paint off locos and other rolling stock and repainting in their own fictitious color schemes.

I guess I am what is called a non conformist, I like the idea of changing the colors of locos etc, to a few friends of mine I am a vandal and throw a fit if I soak a AT&SF shell into oven cleaner then do a respray in my own livery, final remarks being it looks great but its not real.

I think they are pretty narrow minded and they think I am a screwball but somewhere along the line we still get along OK.

After a more than 3 year self imposed hiatus from the forums ,I felt the time was right for me to return. During that time I had many issues to clear up and I also managed to
make so changes to my layout. As some of you may remember it was called the Foulrift Industrial Park, now renamed Hobbs End ISL. For those who have not checked it out,pic are posted
in the layout section.
Anyway it feels good to be back with fellow modelers.

I've been stock pilling a bunch of FEC aggregate hoppers for the passed few years, whatever I saw on ebay I bought. I have about 10 now and I think I might have bought too many. Anyway they're going to be Tilcon (ex-FEC) stone hoppers. They're Walthers models which have one minor incorrect detail, the end braces are at a 45 degree angle and should be vertical like the rest of them. I shaved that brace off and got the panel hopefully smooth enough and won't be too noticeable. My biggest nightmare of painting cars and engines are color matching and now I need to find a red close to this car body then patch it up for TLTX markings.

The Model Railroad Exhibit

Do you remember when we rode trains and received them at Christmas?
Do you remember the toy catalogs at Hardware Stores, Sears, Penny’s and Montgomery Ward’s featuring Lionel, Marx and American Flyer?

Well, the exhibit at the Madison County History Center at 11th and Meridian in downtown Anderson may help you remember or perhaps you have no knowledge of this history. Then we will help you get a hold on the older memories of others.

Beginning on Friday, November 28th and Saturday the 29th, there will be an exhibit of operating models, displays, and rail history in photos and memorabilia running through December.

The hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM (closed Dec. 24th and 25th) and Saturdays Nov 29th, and December 6th, and 13th - 10 AM to 2 PM

On Friday December 5th, we will be open for Winterfest in Anderson from 10 AM to 7 PM.

On exhibit is a replica of a ¼ scale model of the Baker Valve Gear ready to operate on a New York Central Railroad steam locomotive. This is a large wooden setup built by Maurice Lewman, a retired engineer.

Then there is the HO, On30, O Scale Traction, O-27 Gauge (Lionel), N scale, S Gauge American Flyer layouts, and an HO Ringling Bros and Barnum, and Bailey 1946 HO scale circus train display, all for your viewing pleasure.

The Big Four (New York Central) ran through Anderson both east and west and north and south, and the Pennsylvania Railroad ran north and south, while the Central Indiana Railway ran east and west. In Alexandria, there was the Nickel Plate running east and west. We have numerous photos on the walls and other memorabilia as well.

Come out and see the glory of Model Railroading and look over the photos and memorabilia. Just look for the Railroad Crossbucks and come on in!

Although my layout is basically complete (maybe not) I feel that it needs some kind of element(s) in the background to tie everything together.
As the industrial park sits near a river I was thinking of perhaps using a ready made photo backdrop that might show both trees and rives.
Can anyone provide me with some web sites that do backdrops?

Good morning gents, i am looking to buy a Model Power 040 Switcher to use on my 4x1ft inglenook style layout, opinions please if you have or have owned one of these ,
would it be suitable? ie.what could i expect it to run like?
Can Kadees be fitted?
